Choosing the Correct Filter Size

stack of green frame 16x20x1 filters showing nominal and actual size being organized by employee

Nominal Size vs. Actual Size

The nominal size is a shorthand number rounded to the nearest whole or half inch, normally in a larger font (ex: 16 x 20 x 1). Whereas the actual size is an exact measurement, normally in a smaller font, that depicts the filter's precise dimensions (ex: 15.50 x 19.50 x 0.75). All filters have both.

air filter with the length width and depth identified next to a green measuring tape

Measuring Your Air Filter

If your current air filter does not have a dimension listed on the frame, use a tape measure to record the width x length x depth to find the actual size. Then round these measurements up to the nearest inch to find a corresponding nominal size, which will be easier to locate when searching online.

  • To maintain a healthy lifestyle, as breathing dirty air can put you at risk to develop asthma, allergies, and other respiratory ailments. Plus, old filters can cause system defects which may lead to unwanted expenses via energy costs and repairs.

  • We generally recommend replacing your filter every 90 days to keep your system running efficiently and air clean. But this is subject to change based on filter size and variable factors for pet owners, allergy sufferers, homes with children, etc.

  • Most of our filters are universally compatible and will work with any furnace, air conditioner, heat pump, or HVAC system as long as you choose the proper size. But if you see a specific brand name on a listing, make sure it matches your unit model.

  • This varies for every customer depending on specific needs such as the number of vents in your home. However, our selection includes package quantities that range from 1 to 12 filters, so no matter what your situation may be, we've got you covered.

  • After finding the right size, turn off the power supply and remove the cover from your intake vent before taking out the old filter. Then just insert your new filter to match the direction of air flow, replace the cover, and turn the power back on.

Had a small issue with order (maybe was caused by me, not sure) either way around it, they went far above to satisfy me as the customer and I have placed more orders through them. Furnace filters, which are very high quality and exactly what I was looking for. Not cheap knock-offs.

Product received was not blue, as in the advertised picture.Appears they are switching over to generic "white" color for their entire line. It IS marked as MERV 13 on the side of the individual filters, so I'm hoping that's actually what I received.I do like Filterbuy for price/value, filtration, and airflow vs the bigger name filters. I've never had a problem with my coils freezing up like some other brands.I'd recommend

My wife and I struggled for months to source the proper HVAC air filter for our system. A large part of the issue may have been due to the fact that the HVAC hardware in the attic is clearly a Frankenstein situation where previous owners had HVAC techs "rebuild" the whole indoor evaporator mechanism with a bunch of random parts from at least 3-5 different brand names.Anyways, I was tasked with managing this part of the condo once I moved in a few years ago and it was a struggle to figure out how it should be properly set up. After buying several filters of the wrong format/size we finally were able to confirm with an HVAC tech the proper size and proper installation of said filter. These filters are great. The only thing you should be concerned about is how well your HVAC system can handle higher-grade filters. I knew I wanted a HEPA-graded filter (I did my best to vacuum/clean out the ducts at least 2-3 times in the past 5 years), but I didn't realize that it could impact the performance of the HVAC system if it's too high of a grade. The filter an HVAC tech installed when we were trying to figure out why the system wasn't working consistently was almost transparent and clearly did not impede airflow. These filters need to be installed in the right direction (common with any decent filter) and clearly require much more force to push air through them than any super cheap option your HVAC tech might have in their truck. Does having a HEPA-grade filter impact airflow from the vents? Yes. Is it worth it? Yes--assuming your system can handle pushing air through the new bottleneck.Unfortunately, if your HVAC system can't handle moving air through this I think you will be in the market for a new evaporator/internal HVAC component in the near future. I spent hours (in aggregate) researching options for this and coming up with possible fixes that wouldn't require replacing the whole AC unit. We ultimately had to due to the compressor (the part that's outside) failing, but the installers confirmed that the old unit wouldn't have been able to keep up with higher-end filters anyways.TL;DR: Great filters. Only problem is that if your HVAC isn't robust enough to support pushing air through high-grade filters it will prove to you and your family that you need a new system. I still highly recommend these filters but if you're switching from super cheap/no-name filters to this and your system is old... you may be looking at a whole new HVAC setup if it can't handle airflow effectively.

My apartment building recently changed the type of filters they use to save costs. They went from a brand name MERV 11 filter to a no-name MERV 6 filter. I immediately noticed a difference in my air quality and the amount of dust in my apartment. As I have COPD and am on oxygen this was not good. I did some research and found out the vast differences in MERV ratings and decided I need to purchase my own filters for the sake of my lungs. I found these MERV 13 at a great price so ordered them looking forward to breathing better soon. Unfortunately they sent the wrong size! I contacted Customer Service who were very friendly and professionally and immediately shipped out the correct size. I think they put a rush on the shipping as I had the correct filters in just a couple of days. I can tell the difference in the air quality already! I'm am looking forward to dusting so I can see how much less dust accumulates less quickly. These MERV 13 filters trap just about everything - they are the highest rated for residential use. Not even the particles from the summer wildfires are going to get through. Very happy with my purchase (so are my lungs!) and will be buying from this awesome seller again.

Had 1 of 4 arrive damaged, but a replacement was dispatched without a fuss.So far 2 are working well in a NorthBox filtration unit, and look forward to getting our second NorthBox running as well. Will update on filter performance once they’ve both had a chance to work away a while.

I taped a single Merve13 filter to a 20" fan to build a free standing air filter. I also taped four, 5" X 20" X 20" Merv 13 together with a 20" fan to build a second free standing unit. Both cleaned the air in my 2,400 square foot house after a few minutes - checked it out with an air quality meter. Not much 'cleaning' difference in the two except the 5" one with a much greater filter area will last much longer before it needs to be replaced. I have a 5' filter in my furnace as well and change it every 6 months, but it probably would easily last a year. After 6-months there is only very little residue on the filter.
