I got this grate because our fires were hard to get going. They would quickly die down after the kindling burned, even with the smallest logs we used. We have an older home with a pretty big area within the fireplace. I thought maybe that the embers were falling through the grate (which was already elevated at the advice of our fireplace inspector when we asked about the trouble we were having), so perhaps it wasn’t getting enough heat to sustain the fire. I figured I’d give this a go. It’s been a game changer. It’s also quite sturdy / strong so I expect it will last.

My wood stove has a cast iron grate that melted through the middle, but still has good legs and cross beam structure. I broke off the low hanging yielded metal bars from the old grate and attached this ember retainer on top to span the hole. With some heavy gauge bailing wire (14 gauge) and lineman's pliers, I tied off the ember retainer at six points around the perimeter so it won't move when I clean out the ashes. This also will keep the retainer from bending in the middle when red hot. After several hot fires, the ember retainer is holding up well including the bailing wire at the perimeter. So far so good. This saved the old grate from going into the trash and is a lot cheaper than buying a whole new grate. Be careful that the grate is rather sharp at the edges. The small ember retainer worked perfectly for me.

My crate (i think thats what its called) had a hole in the middle of it. I bought this laid it in the middle of the crate and fixed my problem for half the money! Very steady-durable I was impressed!

Received already bent. I had to straighten out a couple of place with a hammer before I tack-welded this to the fire grate.

It is enabling me to use my grate for cosy evening fires by covering the large holes in the old grate and preventing hot embers from falling through too soon.
