Needed this for a live-dead-live test when teaching the EV world and no 120V is close by. Best meter company hands down and the unit performs flawlessly.

I purchased this almost immediately upon learning of its existence. I’m a strong believer in LDL testing, but let’s be honest: that is almost impossible in real-life industrial field work. Your average plant doesn’t have receptacles located anywhere (much less everywhere) you might need to prove your meter for troubleshooting purposes, much less for confirmation of hazardous energy isolation. Another benefit of a proving unit such as this is being able to practice what you preach: all safety programs stress LDL testing, and this device makes such a life-saving policy remarkably convenient. I’ll go so far as to say that this kind of tool should be a requirement on every electrical job site, and the fact that it isn’t just goes to show that “safety departments†are intended to keep insurance costs down and deflect liability instead of actually improving employees’ work safety environment.

I received the Fluke PRV240 Proving Unit today, so I was extremely eager to try it out. The unit itself is lightweight and fits in the palm of your hand. The fact that it comes with a hanging strap is a very nice touch. The proving unit has a voltage selector which let's you choose between AC and DC voltage. Once you stick your probes into the terminals, a power indicator light turns green to let you know that it is working. I tested the unit using a Fluke 117 and a Fluke 87V to see if the results where going to be the same. After I chose the AC voltage, I was able to get a reading of 240V using both of my multimeters. However, on the DC setting the unit never reached the full 240 DC volts. The highest reading that I was able to get was 238 DC volts using both multimeters. Even though the unit didn't reach the full 240 DC volts, it is still a great way to test a voltmeter before using it on a live circuit. I took pictures of the tests that I took using both of my multimeters.

The item was supplied with batteries installed, so was ready for use as soon as it was received. The Amazon packaging (a simple plastic bag, with no cushening) was inadequate and the items carboard packet was ripped and crushed.

Worth while purchase, tested all the meters in the shop. We ended up finding atleast 5 meters were out by over 10volts +/ -, when dealing with VFD and PLC this is huge.

Batteries that arrived with this unit were flat which was a bit of a disappointment. I would strongly urge any electrical engineer to get one of these or an equivalent - I nearly had a BIG accident quite a few years ago because I didn't have one of these (and didn't use a known live - my colleague stopped me in time!!)

Arrived with flat batteries. I suspect that I may have to take the batteries out if I'm not using on a daily basis.
