I bought this Solar Charge Controller to use with my JVR Automatic Chicken Coop Door (purchased from Amazon). Although I have A.C. power connected, the door closes on power outages. I live in rural FL and the power frequently drops out. The door controller operates on 12VDC and comes with a 1A 120V AC:12V DC transformer. I connected the secondary of the transformer (12VDC) to the Solar Charge Controller input where a Solar Panel normally connects and used a small UPS battery (also from Amazon) connected to the Solar Charge Controller and connect the Solar Charge Controller output to the Chicken door control. Although the explanation seems complicated, it took less that 10 minutes to make the connections and only few minutes longer to physically mount the Solar Charge controller and the battery. Normal configuration has the small transformer connected to A.C. power and the Solar charge controller connected to the Chicken door coop and the backup 12VDC battery. Now the door will remains open and operates normally when power is lost. So far, I am happy with the operation and quality of this Solar Charge Controller. The Solar Charge Controller also has a visual control panel providing a visual indication of the DC voltage and it is intuitive in operation.

I use this to charge the batteries that power my driveway gate.I have two, 12v 25W solar panels that are wired in series to this controller. The batteries are two 12v LiFePO4 10Ah batteries. On the load side, I have the driveway gate controller, a temperature sensor for the controller cabinet, a 24v to 12v step down transformer, and a 12v exhaust fan for the controller cabinet. The solar charge controller fits nicely in the cabinet and has worked flawlessly so far!

I had a couple solar panels laying around and ordered this so I could use them to make a small battery bank charger. Easy to hook up, instructions were quite clear. There’s a couple YouTube videos out there as well to help if you need the extra help.

If you buy this, know that you are getting a $10 solar charge controller. That should pretty much wrap this review up.It is not robust, ultra efficient or great at anything except being kind to your wallet. If you have a small setup (say less than 100 or 150 watts), and you aren’t playing with your configuration (i.e., redoing your connections), it could serve you well. For me, it is just an ultra cheap backup solar charge controller. I have lots of solar panels and batteries. If I am in the middle of power outage and I have a problem with one of my small setups, I want something handy that I can use right now. Also, I am working on building ultra cheap setups for friends or family. I think this solar charge controller is pretty awesome considering the price. I don’t know about the long term reliability yet. Perhaps having a spare on hand isn’t a bad idea.

Update: After using this for a day, it began to operate intermittently. I removed the rear cover to find that the power components (the TO-220 components shown in photo) have silicone heat sink pads on them but they don't actually touch the metal rear panel to dissipate heat. I used some thermal transfer compound on them and reassembled. Now it seems to be working consistently. I'll know more after a day of charging & operation.Original review; It does work and that's all I expected. The push buttons are of the membrane type and feel so cheap that you'll swear you broke them when you press them down. Luckily I won't be fooling with this very much or I'd just solder in some real push button switches. The LCD screen is about 1/8" to the right of the window on the front of the device. Not too impressed with the look of it at all.The front panel/decal/sticker is coming off before I ever used the thing. Just pulled it out of the box and damn - this is pretty poor workmanship showing here! The terminal strip doesn't line up 100% with the holes where you insert the conductors, nor with the holes where you insert your screwdriver to tighten them. They do fit 10AWG wire though!Hey, I saved money and that's what counts. This thing still works (6 days since install) and as long as it continues to - it's gonna be okay.Be sure and connect/disconnect the cells, the battery & the load exactly in the order they prescribe in the instructions and you'll be fine.If I knew it was going to be this poorly made, I would have spent $3 more and got a nicer one.
