I bought this slate for my wreck diving certification, but I wish I'd spent a little more for something of higher quality. On the second dive, we were required to sketch a map of the wreck, which is hard to do when the pencil detaches from the cheap plastic coil and gets lost at the bottom of a lake. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to me after jumping off the boat

The slate and pencil are great. They work well underwater and I like having multiple pages at my disposal. However the tether on it needs some help. It really needs a retractable tether so I can stick it in a pocket and pull it out I found myself struggling to unclip it when I needed to use it. The size is great when needing to share with another diver.

This slate’s writing surface is slightly larger than many. It also folds out, giving additional notation space that instructors, dive masters, and mappers will find invaluable. One of my favorite features is the extra-thick graphite pencil encased in a high-vis holder that is large enough to grip easily even if wearing gloves. The pencil stows securely into an integrated channel that protects the point plus resists inadvertent deployment. The holder also protects the point. I also especially like the pencil’s coiled leash that, unlike silicone tubing, doesn’t get in the way or risk easy entanglement.The large diameter graphite increases notation visibility and is also less likely to break under pressure. Replacement pencils can be ordered separately through amazon.The slate is easy to pop open and latches securely. Dampened Magic Erasers and Scotch-Brite household scrub pads remove all graphite notations without difficulty (I prefer the Magic Eraser as it is non-scratching).The robust plastic attachment carabiner has a strongly tensioned wire gate that resists inadvertent opening yet can still be opened with one hand. Because of the small gate opening the clip can be slightly difficult to attach to a D-ring. Also, because there is no integrated method to detach the slate from the carabiner, I will be adding a retractable lanyard to my BC, and clipping the slate’s carabiner to the lanyard.For these many reasons, this is my favorite dive slate and I highly recommend it.

It’s terrible it will not erase once you write on it. Do not buy trust me.
