Fits my Starrett caliper perfectly, is quite well machined, and does appear to be made of hardened steel. The lock screw threading is also well machined with smooth travel and excellent egagement. The bottom surface is fully straight (no light passes when placed on a known true flat surface) and measures a true 90 degrees when fitted to my caliper (as measured with a Starrett protractor). I had been considering a Starrett depth base, but decided to try this first due to the significant cost difference. I'm glad I did. There is simply no possible improvement over this item that could be worth paying 3 to 4 times as much. To be honest, I'm not sure there is ANY possible improvement over this item. It checks all the boxes of precision and function.

i really like that the feet are flat. it makes it easy to press down with my thumb for more stability. fits my igaging caliper well enough. also since the igaging has a 0 button you can just attach the t-bar and put the caliper on a flat surface, let the depth gage slide out a bit if it wants to (mine comes out .001-.002 when the bar is flush with the base of the caliper), 0 out and you're perfectly accurate with no fiddling. :)

I have a lot of Fowler stuff, numerous gauges mostly and it’s good to very good quality. This thing however is a fail.It doesn’t screw on/clamp on tightly to my Mitutoyo caliper, and the design allows it to “kick†the the side a little which keeps the end of the caliper from squaring up. I guess I should have paid the extra money and got the genuine Mitutoyo brand.
