  • ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS: This bore gage features a dial indicator with a graduations of 0.0005" and a measuring depth of 9.5"
  • EXTENDED RANGE: This 1.4-6" range bore gage, with a two-point contact system, is used for measuring hole diameters and also to detect geometry abnormalities such as ovality and taper; carbide-tipped anvil contact points provide extended wear and improved abrasion resistance
  • SELF CENTERING: The easily adjustable bore gauge is self-centering for fast, accurate measurements
  • EASY AND EFFICIENT: This bore gage comes with an insulated grip and a chrome plated handle for easy use.
  • SET INCLUDES: Set comes with two self-centering measuring heads, an extension holder, spacers, and a fitted case

Fowler Cylinder Dial Bore Gage with carbide tipped anvils has a measurement range of 1.4 to 6 ". This product has a 1-year warranty offered by Fowler High Precision. Bore gages measure holes, or bores, in a workpiece. They can measure the interior diameter of a hole at any depth (within its reach), while internal micrometers can only measure to the depth of their contacts. Bore gages are typically calibrated with a setting ring and come in two types: simple and direct measuring. Simple bore gauges are used with a caliper to transfer the hole measurement, while the more complex gauges take the measurement directly and display it through a vernier, dial, or digital display. Bore gages have a two- or three-point contact, indicating how many points on the gage head touch the inside of the bore. Two-point contacts are better at measuring ovality, while three-point contacts are used to measure lobing or triangular form error. Pistol-grip bore gages are used for fast, single-handed operation with repeatable results from one operator to another. Bore gages can also be used in special applications, such as measuring threads, spline pitch diameters, and deep bores. Fowler, an American company, manufactures premium inspection and measurement instruments like electronic indicators, calipers, bore gages, and micrometers. The company, founded in 1946, is headquartered in Newton, MA.

Delighted with this bore gage, as it has proved to be much better than the "error specs" stated by the manufacturer, especially the repeatability spec of 0.0004". The gage I received repeated within ~ 0.0002" repeatedly. All anvils for the 1.4 - 6" range were in the case, none were missing. The empty anvil slots were irrelevant. The people claiming that anvils were missing most assuredly figured out that all anvils for the 1.4 to 6" range were included in the case. Good product and packaging. Received on time. Highly recommend this Dial Bore Gage. BTW, the price was great.Thank You, L.B.

Product works great, very smooth action and very accurate. I'm not a professional by any means but have used this set to check cylinder taper/out of round, and bearing clearances on a few engines now and they have more than paid for themselves as opposed to paying the machine shop to do it.

Great dial bore gauge, exactly what I was searching for to add to my engine build tool collection. Accuracy is very important when it comes to engine components going inside the engine block, so measuring 3 to 4 times on each cylinder gives me peace of mind knowing that the critical tolerence between cylinder bore and piston match preset specs. Thankyou very much for delivering a reliable product that I will use on many engines for many years.

I will update this review after I have had a few good opportunities to try these out. So far I have attempted to assemble the pieces and get a little feel for them. They seem a bit clumsy, or maybe its me... certainly they are more involved than what I realized. Follow up: I did use this several times; and once you get it set up, it works very well. Spacers and anvils have to be selected for the nearest range to what your target bore is going to be. A very nice tool that can reach into deep bores, and with careful handling practice, provides accurate readings.

Update to original review below: After returning the instrument described below, I bought Fowler's 52-646-500 which has much better accuracy and appears to be suitable for engine work. I got the instrument a few days ago and tried it out and am happy with it. Good repeatability and it does appear to be measuring correctly as a "comparator" based on some cross-checks I did. So, while this inexpensive unit (below) is not appropriate for MODERN engines, Fowler's other gauge, the 52-646-500, is fine. Obviously, though if you are in the 1%, buy the Mitutoyo gauge but I guess people who are in the 1% don't rebuild their own engines (LOL).Would be nice if Fowler or Amazon were aboveboard and honestly and OPENLY disclosed in the advertising that the accuracy of this gauge is only plus or minus .0009 inches, and repeatability is only guaranteed to be within plus or minus .0004 inches which values essentially make this "measuring" tool useless for any actual precision work on a modern engine where, say, the allowed out of round is .0004!! Got item in mail yesterday and returning it today. This should not be marketed for precision work. Had it been OPENLY discloses in plain ENGLISH that the error is so large, I would have been alerted that it is not appropriate for my intended use and all the waste involved in shipping it back and forth could have been avoided. These manufacturers and their representatives should be bending over backwards to DISCLOSE the RELEVANT facts regarding a product and I shouldn't have to engage in games trying to find the data. This sort of outcome is frankly habitual and is one of the reasons this country sucks. At any rate, if you are measuring an engine cylinder you need a gauge with a total accuracy much, much better than the .0009 in. that Fowler only BELATEDLY discloses once the product is actually in your mailbox and by then it's too late.

I bought this because it's one of four brands my shop has approved for quality control. Often, shop tools are treated poorly by people who didn't pay for them. This way, I can trust the measurements because I'm the only person that uses the tool.

Works well for me. You can reasonably extrapolate the .001 dial increments (easy to read graduations) to 0.0005" so if you are clearancing for say .001 piston to wall as found in a Harley hyper type piston it is just good enough to see it moving either side of that. You'd need a 0.0001 accuracy gage for super refinement but this gage works fine for most applications. For forged piston clearance of say 0.003 it is very good.

Work perfect, got a warranty claim on a cylinder because of this tool but the case does have to be worked on for holding the bits properly

Works as expected, and is of decent quality for the price. Keep in mind you require a reference measurement device (micrometer or vernier).Would recommend
