Even though I'm recovering from "terminal" cancer (!) I still try to stay active. When out in the wilds I need a dependable way to signal, and a whistle is a great way to do so. FOX has an excellent reputation for making dependable products and that's why I selected this brand. I'm happy with the whistle and have no complaints or concerns. The silly thing is they added a decent lanyard but the connecting hardware looks to be made of the thinnest possible metal that will still hold its shape. Why would a company make a great whistle then cheap out on the extra part??? It's like paying for a Cadillac then finding out out it has bicycle wheels! My safety and security may depend on signaling for help, but if I snag this whistle and it pops off and disappears... well, I expected better than that. FOX needs to wake up and realize that EVERY part of their product reflects on their name. This reflection is not good.

Been a police officer for 27+ years and have worked secondary jobs doing traffic my entire career. Got my first Fox 40 about 10-12 years ago and was amazed at how much louder and attention gathering it was compared to the chrome whistles with the pea inside they gave us through my department. At one job I have worked for over a decade, I am “the whistle guyâ€. I feel safer because I know people in cars can hear this whistle, which means they know I am there. I did learn the hard way to keep it in the middle of my mouth because if it went towards either side and I blew it, I would hurt my own ear on that side. Only thing with this order is one of my traffic regulars said he was disappointed that I now had a black whistle, because he liked all the different colored ones I’ve had over the years.

Like the Fox40 Classic, they're not so much loud as just painful close up. It almost seems to sustain, since it leaves your ears ringing if you test it anywhere other than a wide open field.I have no doubt that these are the loudest non-explosive signal I can easily carry while hiking and backpacking in places with no cell service. If I can make a loud enough noise to be heard, these are the way to do it. I keep one in each of my day packs and my backpacking pack, as well as a Classic that goes in my pocket before a hike when I remember it.

Bought these to go on my kids packs while we are hiking. A good wildlife deterrent, or for communication across the water in canoes. There is a standard meaning for how many whistle blasts you blow, but you can come up with your own whistle language too while on the trail if you are unfamiliar with any.
