I love rawhide mallets for jewelry. They don't leave marks on my work and this one is perfect. I'll be getting a bigger one soon

I read up on how to condition a new mallet for use. I use the soaking in boiling water method then pounded it out. I happened to use the metal teeth of a giant plumbing wrench to pound on so I could sit and watch TV while I did it (drove my household crazy but oh well). It got it just soft enough not to mar my jewelry metal and got rid of the hard resin that is too hard and sharp. The size two is a good weight and fit for me on a ring mandrel. I expect this will last me a very long time - or outlast me.

Nice enough, but hard to break in. Bought it to use for jewelry. Still trying to get it softened up after watching multiple videos as suggested, but it works fine to harden wire.
