The depth/angle gage make precise depth measurements in small holes and slots. The 6" x 1/4" etched stainless steel rule is graduated in 32nds and 64ths. It has a 2-1/2" hardened steel base. Conforms to government specification GGG-G-17b.

Opened the package, the thumb screw would not clamp on the ruler. The reason was debris from the machining process. Cleaned the debris and remaining burrs. Then checked for square, the spindle is machined off center, unable to achieve a square setting. Very disappointing!!! This was a quality manufacturer in the past, just another source to eliminate going forward!

I have this model for in-shop use and ordered this one for service van field-use. No offense to India manufacturing, but this series of the '444' is a different, bulkier, softer-metal version of the previous American-manufactured series. I engraved my business name in it and the older models steel was so much harder that the engraver barely marked the steel surface, where the new model engraved into the steel easily.

I purchased this to use a a depth gauge for drilling, wood turning hollow forms and boxes. Used for one week. The base plate looks like it is cast and there are mold seam marks on the sides. The milling for the slot in for the rule is uneven with high spots causing the rule to not slide well. When I took it out of the package there was machining oil and metal flake debris on the gauge and under the screw that required me to disassemble and de-grease, clean and lightly re-lubricate. The rule still slides roughly due to the poor milling of the slot. The rule itself is nice, with fine graduations, metric (150mm) on one side and inches(6) in 64ths on the other something the Starrett does not seem to have. There is no slot cut out as shown in the photo to read the rule.In general I'm disappointed with the quality of the gauge but really didn't want to pay for a Starrett at 2-3 times the cost. I tossed the packaging so can't return, maybe a different one would have better quality control. It will serve its purpose.3 stars, rough milling, nice rule, will do its job, I don't care if it is square or not. (January 2014)

I purchased this to use as a quick way of setting length projection on a lathe at work. I could never get consistent lengths of my parts. I have been machining for 40 years and this is something that is a pretty common way to set a length in simple lathe operations. I couldn't figure what my problem was, come to find out that using a 1-2-3 by placing the flat of the base on the 2" side and running the scale down the 3" side there was about a .05 gap between the scale and the block. I put it on a mill and re-cut the base. Not for precision or semi-precision work. Quality control what is that???
