These wire piercing probes are a useful tool for certain circumstances. The rather short needle is going to work on thinner insulators. The retractable sheath makes them easier to attach and hold in place, typically the hardest thing to accomplish when testing in the field. Reasonably priced and able to accomplish the task intended, I recommend purchasing a set or two of these.

The insulation piercing feature works well. Good if you need to tag onto a wire with your meter in a dynamic environment, or you can't keep your hands on the probe point. Fairly pricey for a pair of contacts.
