This guitar looks and feels great, but is supports the old adage saying, if you buy a 12-string, you'll spend half of your time tuning and the other half playing out of tune. I'm not a novice, and have set up other guitars that I have and I own all the tools. As much as I'd like to like this the tuning and intonation issues drive me crazy. First, it won't stay in tune. I think part of that is the hollow-body and part the tuning keys. Second, with only a 6 saddle bridge, the intonation is impossible, in my opinion, to adjust on each pair. Even if I try to strike a compromise adjustment. I've tried detuning one half and one step, but it still not too good, in my opinion. I purchased a $450 Fender Squire Paranormal Jazzmaster 12 from Sweetwater. Intonation is perfect to set up since the bridge has 12 saddles. It plays up and down the neck very well, with none of the similar issues. Even the cheap tuning keys stay in tune much better.

Nice action and tone for a 12 string electric. The wood is flawless. Action is like a 6 string but more jangle. Good value for the money

Gretsch recently moved production to China, so maybe they are still trying to figure out how to manufacture 5-series Electromatics to the high standards they used to do at the MIRR factory in South Korea. The quality is way down and the QC is spotty. Sharp frets, bindings coming unglued, pickups rattling in their mounts... these are not things that happened at the previous factory. I would avoid Gretsch's Chinese-made guitars until they can figure out how to replicate the overwhelming success of the old South Korean-made guitars.

So listen I have made a review of this guitar before. I tried it and gave it back in favour of a Rickenbacker. The Ric was everything you’d expect but also a little tricky to play, the fretboard is tiny. This Gretsch has a fretboard like a big acoustic with the easy action of an electric. I love it to bits already and have played for a hour straight out the box. I haven’t even plugged it in yet. It’s so much fun to play. The headstock is a little heavy so is always wanting to tip down but a good strap will fix that I’m sure.If you are in two minds and read this I hope you forget your fears and go for it. Life is too short, get the guitar.
