Expect to put a bit of love into sharpening it. That is, it wasn't dull, but it wouldn't shave. Check it for true squareness. Minor trueing if any necessary. Clean the grease, wax it up, and you have a pretty good #7 jointer plane in your toolbox. Arrived early. Overall happy with my purchase and I will be recommending it to other people. I will also be purchasing more planes from them.

I took a chance on this budget minded plane with limited expectations, and I can say that so far I’m pleased. I knew that buying a #7 for less then $80 was a gamble and I expected some tuning and I was right. With a limited amount of effort I was able to get the blade polished up to a near mirror finish, however the blade was slightly out of square, so that took a little extra time to square out the bevel. With a slight micro-bevel I was easily capable of shavings thin enough to be transparent. The plane was well packaged and arrive undamaged. The finish is good but not excellent, the back side had a small chip in the paint. Some mineral spirits quickly removed the oil it was coated it. The sole is going to take a little more work to get it to where I would like it to be be, however it is more then serviceable out of the box. Honestly if you’re looking at this plane you've got some woodworking experience and have probably got a specific project in mind, it’s not as useful as a #5 or #4, so I would recommend it. If you’re going to be using a #7 plane every day go ahead and spend the $400-500 on a high end unit, however if you’re going to be using it every now and then, I really don’t think you can go wrong with this. As I continue to use it I’ll update the review if necessary. Hope this helps.

2 stars because after about 5 hours spent flattening the sole, reshaping/grinding the chip breaker, the frog milled surfaces, and (finally) sharpening the blade, it did sorta perform the intended function.the handles seem ok? literally every other part has to be worked over in order to operate. blade is softer than other planes I own and requires frequent honing.if you absolutely must get a longboi to joint some lengthy boards, it'll work eventually. you'll probably hate yourself.maybe just use that 1 good planer you have that you actually like even though it isn't technically as long as it should be. it will do a better job than this in less time.

Right out of the box all surfaces were machined to a fine degree.

I've needed a long planer for awhile. But because I don't use them on a daily basis, I couldn't justify the cost. I saw this, took the chance, glad I did. It's very well made, solid, sole is completely flat. Blade is pretty sharp out of the box.I used it to flatten a 4' x 7' table top. Did great. The only reason I marked it down a star is the chip breaker plate is too thin, and allows shavings to go between it and the blade, causing the mouth to become blocked. I ordered a thicker chip breaker, problem solved. If you need a good planer for occasional use, this is the answer. I also ordered their #5 Jack planer. Both are good buys for the workshop, for half the cost

Overall this isn’t a bad plane. The left side is not square to the sole, but the right side is. Mine had a crack in the tote (handle) and a stray paint spot on the front handle. The painted metal looks good, but the working surfaces are not super smooth. Lots of machine marks. It does cut a decent shaving right out of the box after clean up. This is a decent beginner plane, and with some work a good intermediate plane. Definitely not for professional wood workers.
