I used this paper for Japanese calligraphy and I was pleased with the material. While the sheets were a bit longer than I was used to, the material was spot on so I do recommend.

I got this paper to practice some calligraphy and printmaking and it’s been working out very well. I like the half-raw - it absorbs enough ink but it also doesn’t just soak it up either. Depending on your ink there can be some feathering, but ink (or paint, like gansai) with a slightly thicker consistency holds its edges fairly well. I did notice some oil halo (not sure what else to call it) when using oil based inks, but it wasn’t bad at all. I did find that wetting the paper a little with a spray bottle so that the paper is damp helps to get clearer, crisper images, but make sure it’s not too wet or it has a tendency to rip. Happy with this paper for practice.

The sheets come softly-folded (no creases) and over-sized, with just the right thickness for brush work. They're especially suited for large and extra-large calligraphy brushes. If you're not used to rice paper, it may feel strangely lightweight to you. I'd say it's closest to the unprinted newspaper-level sheets you sometimes get for packing, but just a shade lighter than that. Unlike newspaper-type sheets, a lot of ink on this paper won't immediately bleed everywhere. Definitely recommend.

I ordered this paper to use on my art project but it tears easily so I haven’t used it again. It might work for other projects but not mine

It's a good weight to practice sumi-e and calligraphy. It takes the ink well. However, as is usually suggested, it needs felt (or old towels) under it because the paper is just thin enough for the ink to seep through. It looks like newsprint, only it's a different feel. Almost coarser because it's rice paper, but still rolled into useability.

I ordered the "Half-Raw Xuan Calligraphy Paper - Premium Chinese & Japanese Rice Paper, Ideal for Brush Ink Writing, Sumi-e Painting, 100 Sheets, 13.4" x 26.7", No Grids. 宣纸åŠç”Ÿç†Ÿ "This paper does have a rice paper/bamboo like texture. It is also delicate paper with a hint of translucence that could be used for tracing.There are also faint lines running lengthwise at about a pinky width apart down the page. They seem to be woven into the paper and don't show up on photos because they're that faint. I'm not mad at them though because it gives my eye a spacial awareness and actually helps with my practice art.I've never used a traditional calligraphy paper before, and I love how it works with inks and brushes.

One of the standout features of this rice paper is its excellent ink absorption. Even with wetter brushes, the paper does a fantastic job of soaking in the ink without it bleeding or feathering. This quality is paramount when working on intricate pieces or large characters, as it allows for the depth and richness of color that is often desired in calligraphy. I was pleased that the ink dried relatively quickly, minimizing smudges and allowing me to layer more quickly than with other papers I’ve used.

I love it and my students are thrilled to be able to use it for collage and watercolor. I am planning on experimenting with brush and ink painting, can't wait to use this for that application.
