When it comes to using a full-sized maul for splitting wood, unless you're a pro you're probably going to strike the handle pretty hard sooner or later. I know from sad experience that a single handle strike can break even a heavy, good-quality maul. This protector should completely prevent that. It's heavy, thick rubber that would easily absorb most of the force of the blow. It isn't super-easy to slip on, but it's not ridiculously hard to get it on, either. Once on I don't expect it will move much. Should last for years, if not decades.

I squoze it on my 8 lb maul with a lot of effort. The handle is like an axe handle, 2 1/2" wide X 3/4" thick at the top, so maybe I didnt get the right one? But after boiling it as per the instructions and spraying the handle with wd 40 and beating it on with a sledgehammer and pipe for the last inch, its finally on there. I dont think it will slip off and it will definitely lengthen the life of my maul, just took some elbow grease to install.

I have big ax and a big log splitter. That’s probably more what this is designed for.It didn’t fit at all on my small (4 lb.?) sledge. It just flopped around.Too bad, since this hammer’s handle is starting to show some cracks.Since it didn’t work for me, I still only deducted one star. After all, the dimensions are listed. I should have looked closer. I just assumed it would fit. Nope.
