This set includes two very different tools. The ‘reaction balls’ are to help quick reactions to a batted or thrown ball. They are especially helpful for infielders. The best way to use them is on a flat surface (outdoor hard packed or indoor, but see caution below) and roll or throw them so they hit 1-3 feet in front of the player. The balls bounce differently depending on the throw, and can help teach players to keep their gloves down and come up instead of lurching for the ball. All three balls have the same design, they are just different colors. The nubs on these balls are uniform, instead of different shapes, so many of the throws won’t have a ‘weird’ bounce at all (i.e. they’ll just bounce relatively true like a baseball). This is actually a positive, since real baseballs and softballs don’t bounce at a 180% or even 90% angle.TIP: For a more challenging bounce: give the ball a bit of spin when you throw it. Side spin will make the balls move sideways, and a flick spin (done underhanded) will create more short hopsThey aren’t as effective on grass or a thick carpet, which tends to smooth out the bounce. The harder the ground, the better. Inside in a gym is good. Be careful using indoors – these are quite hard, and a funny bounce could do some damage to a television or a lamp. The other training tool is the ‘reaction speed training bar.’ The concept behind these is good. The idea is to toss them and call out a color, and the person receiving it tries to catch it on the called color. The theory is interesting and a lot of coaches and athletes swear by it – it is way harder than it looks. The better ones are made of a softer foam so you won’t bang your knuckles or bend a finger when practicing. These are rather hard and can only be thrown very softly from a close distance.Overall, a helpful addition to the workout, with the above caveats. I give the balls a 4 and the speed bar a 3 (because it isn’t foam).

Balls are slightly smaller than a baseball. The Y shaped thing is small and lightweight. I guess I got what I paid for, if there's a way to tell on the more $$ items they are higher quality or same as this one.

As a coach, I'm always looking for fun products that help keep practice and training fun. We have a few HECOstix and thought we'd give these a try because of the price. After using them for about 15 minutes, the paint literally started running and smeared onto my fingers. After a few drops and missed catches, we noticed the paint coming off all over them and revealing the yellow foam underneath. I'll be returning them and spending the extra money on more hecostix because they've lasted us over 2 years and still look brand new!
