I got this to make a wood-turning tool called a bedan. Last year I made one out of M2, and I wanted to try M35 to see if it would hold an edge longer. M35 is basically M2 which has cobalt added to improve the wear-resistance and red-hardness. The downside of wear-resistance, of course, is that it takes a lot longer to grind, but a bedan is a pretty simple tool to make, and the red-hardness means you can do most of the grinding on a bench grinder or other high-speed grinder without affecting the hardness. The thing I wasn't prepared for was that the blank had scratches on all four sides and the sides weren't perfectly flat, and, for mainly esthetic reasons, I give my tools all my tools' flat surfaces a high polish with a series of diamond sharpening stones. This has to be done by hand, and in this case it took forever.

I used a 3/16" tool bit to make a broaching tool to cut keyways in gears. After over a dozen keyways the tool is as sharp as when I first ground it.

Not much to them. They’re round, straight, and made of steel.

Proof is in the pudding but I liked the way I ground them down to shape. Will see how they hold up on the lathe

I'm using these (I bought 2) on my mini lathe. needed to custom grind/shape for a specific use that you just cant do with inserts or carbide tipped tooling. These HSS blanks seem to be of some quality and will buy more when needed
