If you are a amateur machinist starting out I would start with ball nose end mills. They are less likely to break on the edges and they do not need a pilot hole like regular end mills. On a drill press these performed perfectly cutting 1018 steel like butter. I had a few jams and the 3/8 did not break or chip perfect for a beginner as they are more forgiving.

I bought these for a cheap starter set, I originally looked at a USA made set from Kodiak but couldn't afford the price. Anyways I figured since I'm still in my first few years as a gunsmith I'd start with the cheaper set and by the time I wore out or broke these ones I could probably afford the better set and wouldn't be using the nice, expensive ones to learn with. I say buy them if you're in a similar situation to me or if you're a hobbyist machinist working in your garage, if you're a professional machinist I doubt you'd be looking at these anyways.
