When you first get the flint and magnesium block, you have to shave off the protective coating on both the flint rod and the magnesium block. Magnesium is a silverish metal, so you'll see it when you shave enough off. I would also recommend taking the striker off the block because there's not enough slack for a good strike. It works well if you know how to strike it properly.

The striker isn’t great. I used it to scrape the magnesium easily, but i had to use a knife to actually strike it.

I recently became obsessed with Survivor, and to spice up my life a bit decided to order this to start my woodstove with. (And practice with for when I get cast on the show ;p) It works well, does exactly what it needs to do! My only complaint is the striker that comes with it isn't super easy to use, in my opinion, but overall not a huge issue. I can't wait to impress my camp friends by starting a fire with this come summertime!
