After some disappointment with Amazon and the description of what I thought were "stereo" tape players (for old cassettes I wanted to digitize) I finally found this. It's plastic through-and-through, and there's no rewind function. But I've begun to transfer tapes through the USB connection and so far it's been perfect. Like they say on TV, "The Price Is Right".

Could not get it to work on either my home computer or laptop but the player itself did play.

I've had a few "walkman" type players in my day. Still have one that I am going to fix soon.. and I have a few cassette players as part of stereo systems... meanwhile I thought I'd get a cheap one to play some used tapes that I've been given. I didn't want to ruin my good cassette players with tapes that might have dirt and gunk on them. I also wanted a backup player to hook up to my computer for converting to digital.First of all, the speaker isn't the greatest. It's not supposed to be. If you want great sound hook it up to external speakers... or listen with headphones/earbuds/headset. The sound quality coming from this unit is GREAT! And loud! - nice range of volume - through the headphone jack. No need for bass boost like some lesser sound quality units that start off sounding tinny... and need the BB to sound decent. The speaker is simply meant as a convenience for monitoring. Like when you are searching for a song, or checking out an unkown tape. That's it.... to monitor. When walkmans first came out they had NO speaker, just the headphone jack. It was annoying... if you were trying to do what I wrote above, just searching for a song or scanning through songs... just annoying. So I searched and did research... way back when...and found a "walkman" type player that had the speaker... and that's exactly what I used it for and it was great. No need to fumble around attaching and putting on headphones just to check out a few things on a tape. You cannot expect a small unit like this, with a tiny speaker to have a speaker that sounds good... that's just stupid!Secondly, it does not have a rewind function. BFD. If it was a recorder, "rewind" would be essential. But it's not... it's just a player... why would you need rewind? I mean, I'm not going to listen to a song, and rewind and listen again, and rewind... I mean c'mon.... THAT is stupid. It doesn't really need the rewind function. You listen to a side want to listen to the side again... then turn over and FF... not that hard. By not having the RW function, the price is kept low and the electronics/mechanics to a minimum. I've had a player like this in the past too... no big deal. This hooks up via USB to the computer for converting to digital. You can either use the disc which has the DAW, Audacity, on it, or download the freeware from the Audacity site. Audacity is possibly the most used free DAW out there and it has a lot of functions to cut, remove, paste, remove noise, speed up, slow down, etc. Just about anything you would or could want to do with your music. You can save as MP3, WAV, FLAC... etc. You can record an entire side, split the songs up, put titles and information on them, cut them and save them as separate files, or whatever you want to do.This seems to really suck up a lot of power. Do NOT use regular batteries in this unit. As the instructions say... use alkaline batteries. I stopped using Energizer batteries decades ago.. for everything, they just do not have enough juice!Overall, I kinda really like this thing... it is good for what it is. Just don't have stars in your eyes thinking that the speaker is going to sound like you are in right in front of a band blasting music through their amps at you...Although, it you plug in some decent headphones, you WILL have that experience ;)Later note: A few times I could hear the speed going slow then fast and slow again. The more I played this cassette player, the more it "loosened" up and the speed was constant. Just seems to have needed some "wear in" time.

This product is not worth 2 cents. Not all cassettes play on the equipment. Volume is very low. Quality of sound is that which you would expect from a child's toy. I will not be returning due to the pandemic we are experiencing - nor will I donate it as it is not worth donating to charity. It's in the trash.

The playback is not very clear and the speaker volume is not loud enough.
