LP-UNF A+ 1

Kali Audio - LP-UNF - Ultra-Nearfield Studio Monitor Pair

The LP-UNF is an ultra-nearfield desktop studio monitor system designed to be used in small spaces where the ability to get loud is limited, either by room acoustics or the tolerance of neighbors. The LP-UNF presents full-range audio at reference levels with plenty of headroom at 0.8 meters, or about arm’s length.

The system is made up of a primary and secondary speaker, each with a 4.5-Inch high excursion woofer and 1-Inch dome tweeter. The LP-UNF features USB-C, TRS, RCA, and Bluetooth inputs for seamless integration into your deskscape.

The LP-UNF uses much of the same technology as Kali’s best-selling LP-6 and LP-8 V2 speakers. A 3-D imaging waveguide is employed to create a detailed, lifelike stereo image where all of the elements of the mix can be clearly perceived in space. The large front-firing port tube uses a unique. fluid dynamics derived shape that eliminates port noise and compression. This allows you to place the speakers against walls without worrying about adverse effects on the port’s performance.

LP-UNF A+ 2

The USB-C input lets users who aren’t recording use the LP-UNF without a separate interface. You’ll enjoy pristine sound with 24-bit/48kHz conversion. This makes the LP-UNF an excellent choice for traveling setups or as a floating pair of speakers in dynamic recording situations.

LP-UNF A+ 3

The LP-UNF is uniquely tuned for its role as a desktop speaker. The desk is accounted for as an acoustic element of the system, solving some of the problems that are typically presented with putting speakers on a desk. DIP switches are provided to account for the position of the system in a room, and for you to dial in bass and treble to your preferences.

The LP-UNF has boundary EQ settings for placing the speakers:

• On stands

• On a desk, away from walls,

• On a desk, against a wall,

• On a desk, on speaker stands, away from walls,

• On a desk, on speaker stands, against a wall

• On a recording desk with rack units, away from walls,

• On a recoding desk with rack units, against a wall.

The LP-UNF is part of Kali’s 2nd Wave product family, utilizing low noise-floor technology, upgraded drivers, and an advanced limiter circuit to maximize output and fidelity while keeping noise to a minimum.

LP-UNF A+ 4

TRS and RCA Inputs

The LP-UNF offers TRS and RCA inputs. Gaming consoles, televisions, consumer electronics, and pro audio gear - Whatever you are connecting to the LP-UNF, it has an appropriate input to support it!

LP-UNF A+ 5

3-D Imaging Waveguide

The 3-D Imaging Waveguide allows you to hear a 3-D soundstage from a stereo pair of speakers. By matching the shape of the waveguide to the interactions of the HF and LF drivers, this waveguide produces a stereo image that is wider, taller, and deeper than the space where the speakers are placed.

The LP-UNF accomplishes this by ensuring that the speaker’s reflected sound matches its direct sound. Every time you hear a loudspeaker, you're hearing both the direct sound from the speaker, and reflections from the speaker's signal bouncing off of objects in the room.

When those reflections are congruent with the direct sound from the speaker, listeners perceive a better sound overall, and are able to make out very subtle details like where microphones are placed in a room. When done very well, the stereo image will be three-dimensional.

This gives users a very high degree of confidence in their mix. It allows them to mix faster, and produce better mixes overall.

I use these way outside the intended use as ultra near field monitors, putting them on either side of my TV while connected to a sub in my small bedroom for both watching movies/shows and airplaying music, and I typically listen 1.5-2 meters away on my bed or desk, raised to ear level using stands. The measurements and impressions of this little speaker are impressive for the price, and seemed to fit the bill for me as small, inexpensive speakers with an accurate/flat response and low distortion. I was worried about performance since I'm using them a little farther than the intended .8m, and also being too dry/boring since they are studio monitors, but I'm very happy with the sound; it's balanced, clear, and very revealing with accurate imaging and a strong phantom center, even when I'm not perfectly on axis like lying on the bed. It gets plenty loud for a small-medium sized bedroom, especially if you add a sub, and you'll have no problem feeling immersed in both music and shows being very clear and detailed, but in a pleasantly natural and non-fatiguing way. The DIP switches are especially helpful in shaping the sound further and I found it really easy to find a balanced and pleasing sound for my placement just using familiar media to fine tune them. My only negative might be the interconnect cable being of an unusual connector type and fairly short at 5 feet, making it hard to conceal the cable if you use it a little farther part than the recommended .8m, but there is an 8ft accessory cable you can buy direct from Kali, or if you have cable skills, make your own. Overall, I'm very happy with these speakers and don't feel I'll be buying anything else for a long time.

my previous computer speakers were the original Kanto era and a sub 8. I loved this, and with the subwoofer the speakers shined above 100 Hz. this was a perfect setup for my desk. THEN, I went and bought the KEF LS50WII and the KC92 for the living room. this sounds fantastic, and having the ability to adjust the high and lowpass filter to the subwoofer made fine tuning the subwoofer very simple. this new set up began to detach me from the Kanto built in crossover at 100hz. I began to appreciate music with a cross over closer to 50 hz. Even though my sub placement is excellent, and I cannot localize the sub, I enjoyed hearing the frequencies from the main speakers, at lower listening levels. so I tried the Klipsch Egg Duo. these were excellent, but lacked in the low range, and became distorted with bass, and mid range heavy tracks, having a hollow sound. (prior to the KEF in the living room I tried Kanto TUK and Klipsch RPM 50 with a speed woofer, and SB3000Pro. all were not fit for my taste) Then I tried the Kali audio UNF. The bass is incredible coming out of these little giants, no subwoofer needed. I actually looked under my desk thinking the sub was somehow still magically here in the room. the sound is incredible near field (.8 meters away) and also through out the home they sound lovely too. I am actually enjoying them more than the LS50 for music listening at moderate to low volumes. I love listening to women's vocals. Rihanna, Amya Rodriguez, Julia Pratt, Amy Margret, Mens higher range vocals like SYML, Noah Kahan, John Legend, and Ash Radford. all sound excellent with these speakers. they sound so plain. I think im hearing a flat response. there is simply music. it's something im not used to, and I really am enjoying these speakers. ALOT. for the price these are worth every Penny. I love how there is not a Sub out, so they are a dedicated music only pair of speakers. Im forced to take them as they are, and not try to make them better by adding something else. FWIW. I am using a MAC studio, the Aux out to RCA. according to Apple this is a High Res signal. its analogue. I made the switch a few years ago, and now I hate bluetooth. I cannot comment on the DAC abilities. I am very happy with my purchase, and I am very happy I chose these over the Kanto ORA 4. I love my Kanto ORAs, and they will have a place in a secondary room. but for my desk that gets 4-8 hours of music per day, these speakers are magic.

Although mine arrived with a defective "-" touch button, the sound quality is incredible for 4.5 inch monitors. They aren't lying when they say they can hit as low as 39hz. The stereo image ("soundstage" for all you audiophiles) is absolutely crazy!I know a lot of people want to know how these perform next to Kali's LP-6 v2's. Today is your lucky day:Kali LP-UNF's:- Better for small rooms- Wider stereo image (soundstage)- Punchier- Crisper sound (some might describe it as "bitey")- Ear-fatigue happens a lot faster than when using the LP-6 v2's.- Very compact and better for small setupsKali LP-6 v2's:- More body and articulation in the low frequencies- Flatter frequency response- Rather than "crisp" or "bitey", I'd describe these as "tubby" and "smooth".- Not as good as the LP-UNF's for a room that's not acoustically-treated- Ear fatigue takes a long time to set inIn the end, I went with the LP-6 v2's. Being that I do a lot of mastering, being able to more accurately hear the low end is crucial for getting tracks to translate across various systems. How quickly ear-fatigue sets in is a major factor I take into consideration when it comes to monitors. I'm able to work much longer on the LP-6 v2's. I also very much prefer the "tubby" and "smooth" sound of the LP-6 v2's versus the "crispy", "bitey", and "punchy" sound of the LP-UNF's. The thing I will miss about the LP-UNF's is their incredibly wide stereo image. The first time I heard them, I literally said, "Wow" out loud. I've never heard that sort of stereo image in any other speaker I've listened to.I may be biased, but I really think Kali should rethink the LP-UNF's touch buttons. I feel like they're not nearly as reliable as traditional knobs. It also takes much longer to turn the volume up and down. Another thing I don't like about the LP-UNF's is the connector they use to connect the two monitors. The connector sits loosely when plugged in all the way and sticks out too far. They should really think about implementing a tighter-fitting angled connector for this so that the monitors can be placed closer to the wall (Despite common advice, this is the best place for monitors to be in small home-studios. It has to do with speaker boundary interference (SBIR) and how the offending frequency moves up the frequency range as you move closer to the wall. This makes the SBIR easier to control with thinner acoustic treatment rather than having to resort to bass traps at all of your first reflection points/front wall. Against the wall, the offending frequency would be around 250hz. Acoustically treating this issue is a piece of cake).I know a lot of you want to know how both of these monitors compare to Yamaha's HS5's. I'll start by saying that everything in the LP series beats the HS5's by miles in my opinion. The HS5's are incredibly bright. I'd go as far as saying they sound "harsh". The ear-fatigue sets in VERY quickly. The only role I could see the HS5's playing is as a secondary pair of monitors. I would not mix with them, but I've found them useful for checking my masters on. Sometimes they can reveal problems that other speakers can't.Just to comfort anyone that might be wondering, the LP-UNF's totally CAN be used for mastering. I've definitely gotten good results with them. However, I found myself craving more clarity and articulation in the low frequencies. I find myself having to do less "car tests" when mastering with the LP-6 v2's.Kali's customer service was wonderful. I sent them a video of how the touch button functioned and they offered to send me out a new pair once mine were in the mail. However, in the end, I opted to return the LP-UNF's and upgrade to the LP-6 v2's--a decision I do not at all regret. I sure will miss that nice stereo image though.

The Kali LP-UNF offers great value for money, with a flat frequency response and excellent off-axis performance, delivering clear and accurate sound. The built-in DSP room correction provides multiple modes, making it easy to optimize your listening environment. The USB-C input is a convenient and practical addition, simplifying connectivity. Overall, it's a feature-packed, high-quality monitor speaker, perfect for budget-conscious users who don’t want to compromise on performance.

I wanted to replace my aging Creative T50 speakers. After much reading I tried the AudioEngine a2+ speakers. They were awful, worse sound than my T50's. After even more reading I decided to chance the Kali Audi LP-UNF speakers. Overall sound quality is definitely better tan the T50s, particularly in the base, but I'm not sure that its worth the price difference between the T50 and The LP-UNFs.There are annoyances. I have a 35 inch screen and the cable that connects the two speakers is only just wide enough for this distance. This cable also has a tendency to become disconnected when moving the speakers around to fine tune the sweet spot.Other niggles are1. ,Evident before you buy, but all controls are on the reverse of one of the speakers.2. The speakers do not have a standby mode, so have to be switched off overnight or when otherwise not in use. This is a Kali recommendation to preserve speaker life. Reaching behind the speaker to switch it off , given the limited space available, is annoying.
