The foam on our 30-year-old filter finally gave out and just disintegrated while washing it. I cleaned up the red plastic frame and glued a thin piece of foam to the old frame and at the same time, ordered this replacement. It came with a porous paper-like filter in the same type frame that seems to work just as well as the old foam letting air through. It would stop dirt and dust if the canister bag broke which is its main purpose as an emergency filter to protect the motor.Since it looks like paper, I'll probably not be washing this with water just in case, but using another vac to clean it up. Overall, it does the job of being between the bag and motor as a backup filter.

New filter fits perfectly in my older Sears Kenmore cannister vac. The illustration shows old-style foam filter - replacement is fiber, but works flawlessly. My original order was damaged in shipping, but was promptly replaced without any hassle. Everything working fine - hoping for a few more years of service from good, older machine.

My old, old vacuum from Sears had this filter frame where the filter part had disintegrated. I did not know if I would be able to find one. This one was a perfect fit, and now the motor wont inhale the dust from the vacuum bag! Glad to find it one Amazon. The filter material is more clothlike vs the old filter which was a foam material.

Currently, I’m not sure about the product. The one I received is a paper-like texture, not foam. I’m not sure if this is new and improved or cheap. The one I was replacing is foam and ripped, which is why I ordered a new one. It fits, and I’ll see how well it works. It also had some minor defects in it, but I don’t expect that’ll affect the function.

Love that it fit perfectly! But it’s a white filter material, not the black sponge thing that I had.Based on the pictures, I thought I’d get exactly what I had previous. I’m not sure if the white is better or worse?

Yeah. The gray foam filter element is white but it does not appear to be paper. Rather, it's a fibrous 'cloth' and seems sturdy. I find that the replacement foam-based filters do not last long. I am looking forward to seeing how long this filter element will last. Also, the filter is slightly larger than the one I am replacing -- but it's not the original filter. Nonetheless, the new filter was fairly easy to push into place. Don't let the oversize steer you away from this product.I am using this in a Kenmore 8520 vacuum cleaner.
