This pretty blue kite string spool arrived yesterday and I wanted to provide some comments regarding it, even if I am unable to make good functional use of it right now due to having very cold weather with white stuff forecast for the afternoon. The sizing is pretty good at over 7 inches in diameter. With the strong string currently on the spool that means that for every revolution of the winding spool you will be spooling in (or out) about 21 inches, based on the diameter of the spooled string. So much faster than a little bobbin of string that usually comes with a kite. The 1000 feet of multi strand string spooled onto this is really strong. The string spools through a metal eyelet to allow it to uptake the string and evenly spool it onto the 1" wide outside collection ring. There is a small knob on that collection ring to assist with rapidly spooling it in or out safely, and that knob can be locked down into the inner hub to securely lock it when you have as much length out as you wish to have. You don't have to keep holding the knob all of the time you are flying. The bearings between the central hub and the collection bobbin ensure that it will turn freely and wind very smoothly. You won't be fighting any resistance with those unless you take it to the beach and bath it in sand. I find that my grasp on the molded handgrip through the center hub is a little cramped but would be perfect for smaller hands. I could use this but it wouldn't be real comfortable for very long. My wife's smaller hands fit much better, and since this is eventually going to my 9 year old grandson the problem will be resolved. His hand will fit the molded form much more comfortably. I did find the metal spring clip on the end of the line to be quite firm to both open and harder to close. I finally resorted to sone small needle nose pliers that I have so I could accomplish that. And I’m not worried about breaking a manicured fingernail but just getting the task done. Happy Kiting !

With good wind, you could send your kite to the full 1000 feet of supplied string in just minutes! Biggest drawback is just how easy it is to get your line all tangled up with this thing. If you don't have constant tension on your line, your line is going to fall off the spool in loops and you might not even notice and before you know it you have got a puzzle. The built-in lock is a great feature to prevent the line from unwinding unexpectedly. I like that the kite reel is equipped with a safety lock, allowing you to easily stop the reel from spinning. You can easily stop a plummeting kit from falling out of the sky by quickly reeling it in. Do NOT hand the string reel to young children without locking the crank first. A strong wind can jerk the crank out of a young child's hand causing the inner string reel to spin and let out line very fast. The natural impulse is to panic and grab the string with the bare hand or to put pressure on the inner spinning real and you will get a friction burn.As the kite spins around, it causes the string to twist. There is no issue while the kite keeps tension on the string. The problem seems to occurs when the kite is low to the ground while you reel it in, and tension is lost. You will get a tangled mess and it does no good to try and yank the knot out. You have to unhook the kite and hold the spool as high as possible off the ground and let the twisted string unwind itself. If you can get the twists out, then you can finish winding the string onto the reel.

To start with the negative, this reel winder proved to be too small for my hands, and I usually get L or XL in gloves. Usable, but not comfortable. Not a defect, a limitation. Now, for the good part: using this makes it a breeze for flying a kite (pun intended). All the arm-numbing work for quick reeling-in is gone, and all that’s left is the fun part. Easy to give line, easy to block, easy to reel in. And to top it off, the attachment uses a metal clip so that it takes a few seconds to launch a different kite with the same reel. Totally worth the admission price. The one thing I would voice a concern with is that the line is rather thin, and there is no technical data provided, just a general statement that it “is made of 3 strands of strong tire line, which is made of high-strength ABS resin with high heat and impact resistanceâ€. I would really like to learn specific values for the force this line will withstand, and its stretching characteristics. Even for an amateur user, such data is still valuable because switching to a more powerful kite may push this line past its capabilities. I will still rate this at five stars though, for the degree by which it enhances the fun of flying a kite.

Good design, easy to use. Lots of line, and an easy to use handle for managing the kite while it's in the air. It's a wheel! When you don't want your kite to fly higher and just hang out, the turning handle locks into place! Once locked, the whole thing can be switched hands, or just hand off to someone else entirely.Bringing the kite back to you is a matter of favorable wind, and rotating the wheel with the handle. No hand over hand required. Crank the wheel, and your kite comes back your way.At the end of the string, is a clip! That's right, no tying to a specific kite, this thing goes from one kite to the next. The string is managed through a fixed point on the wheel, so you are always guiding your kite from the same position on the wheel. In other words, both the point of control, and your handle for the wheel are always the same. The amount of line used is controlled by your other hand. Easy to use.

This kite reel makes flying a kite quite a bit easier than using a regular spool. It’s nice to have the winding function. Quality is not top of the line pretty good for the price. All in all this works great for hobby kite flying. I’d order it again.
