If you have one of the toilets that need this anchor - you probably know what a PIA it is to swap out the old anchors - I had to drill mine out. I have trouble getting the new anchors to grab and compress, so I "pre-compressed them in a bench vice to make them a little wider, that didn't work, then I stacked washers on top of the anchor, put a bold in and started tightening them - they grabbed great and worked as needed. Don't forget the installation kit that has the special tools that hold the anchors

This original KOHLER 85040 Anchor Nut worked perfectly with a repair kit that did not have ones that works. Need this original product!

Update 7/21/20After 4 years both toilet seats hold as well as when were originally installed. The design of these is well thought and has no issues if properly installed. If you have installed by yourself a faucet or replaced a cartridge in the shower, this will be an easy job for you, but do not hesitate to ask for help - this installation may be frustrating if you have limited experience with mechanical repairs. This is not at all like installing a regular toilet seat where all you need is a screwdriver and have access from the bottom of the holeI have two Kohler toilets and both needed replacement anchors. This anchor worked really well. These anchors come by itself or as a kit. I have found that most handymen should have appropriate tools to install it without a kit. All you need is a wrench, a socket and a regular screw with hex head. You do not need to remove old anchors, when changing the seat if they are intact . This was a case with one of my installations. Only one anchor was broken, thus it needed a replacement. The other anchor was OK and I screwed the new seat into it without a problem. To install the anchor into the toilet, you hold the anchor with a wrench and use a socket to screw in the hex head screw. Once it is installed in place you can remove hex head screw and install your seat. One of my installations required removal of the old anchors. I have found this process to be more difficult then installation. There is a video on the web with instructions that I found to be very helpful. You will need a long crowbar, mine is 36 long. Long crowbar helps to better modulate, i.e. control the amount of force you apply. Use rocking motions and do not try force the anchor out in one push. The video hints about possibility of breaking the toilet if you do not do it just right.

Actually excellent and necessary replacement for Kohler toilet BUT DOES NOT INCLUDED the necessary screw which if you are searching for this part, then you know this and the screw were frozen and damaged. Also 1 star for the fact that it is a rip off and shame on Kohler for not making good on a flawed design for some of their 1 piece toilets. In the end it worked for me but again it is not worth giving it more than 1 star.

Kohler one piece toilets do NOT have an accessible "under-side" which would afford nut access to the bolts holding the seat to the porcelain. Instead, the bolts screw into expanding aluminum anchors that are "clamped" into the seat mounting "blind" hole. For this to work, the anchor must fit thru the 3/8" dia. blind hole and then, with the seat in place, the 1/4" x 20 bolts must be lubricated and tightened, forcing the internally threaded end of the anchor up toward the top flange on the underside of the ceramic hole, expanding the slotted central part to clamp the anchor between the upper flange and the newly formed "fingers". The upper flange is flatted on opposite edges allowing "something" to hold the anchor from rotating while the bolt is being is being tightened from above the seat mounts. It turns out that the underside of the seat mounts have projections that fit over the flange (and it's flats) preventing the anchor from rotating as the bolt is tightened and the fingers are formed.Alternatively, the anchor can be clamped in place without the seat by removing the black plastic insert from the seat mount and using it to hold and form the anchor. Then, when the anchor is tight, the bolt can be removed, the seat mount re-affixed to the black plastic insert, the the bolt re-tightened.This issue could easily have been avoided had Kohler designed the toilet with a solid flat underside in the area where the seat bolts pass thru the porcelain. The blind holes are nice, giving the toilet underside a smooth curve, but, in my opinion, it's hardly worth the fuss needed to install a replacement seat.

I give it a 2 because I did not realize this is for spares only. It is the right nut for the Kohler toilets, but you need to purchase the replacement kit which has the installation tool with it. KOHLER GENUINE PART 84999

These work perfectly. They really should come with instructions for people less skilled than me. Also, seems ridiculously high priced... but I could not find a better price anywhere. About $10 for what I consider a one dollar item.

I ordered this when changing a Kohler toilet and the existing anchor (which is aluminum) sheared. This is a common problem and there is a lot of information online, including how to remove the damaged anchor. This is a poor design and no longer used. This single anchor (if that is all you need) saves a lot of money as you have to otherwise buy a kit at more than $50 dollars (2 anchors). I was concerned the anchor would not fit given the measurements listed however it fitted perfectly and did the job. Having said that I think that nearly $20 for this small piece of aluminum is very expensive.

this doesn't work, doesn't expand and grip the edges so it just spins while you're screwing it in.

$17 dollars for a$2 dollar piece of aluminium is outrageous. Only putting one in the bag is absurd. Designing a metal compressed anchor for a porcelaine should result in someone being fired. However, it works. Somewhat.

While other toilets have multiple options when it comes to installing toilet seats, Kohler has only one for some of its skirted models, and boy do they make you pay for it. This item is way too expensive and of medium to poor quality for the price. While this anchor works, the first one I bought broke on me and I had to re-order another piece. So far, it has cost me over $60 to replace my toilet seat. Keep in mind, that price is what I paid for these anchors alone - the toilet seat was extra. If these were reasonably priced, I would have given it a reasonable review. Bring your prices down Kohler, there is no way you can justify this kind of money for an anchor.
