White Card

White Card is basically used to define the white balance, which is often replaced by a sheet of white paper due to its easy access to materials nature. The correct exposure of the white card makes the definition of the white balance of the picture noise is so small that very conducive to define. However, the correct exposure of white card compared to gray card to be more difficult, - generally we recommend to use gray card to define the white balance.

Why gray card, white card can be used to define the white balance?

Because both are R = G = B. That is, as long as the card is R = G = B color, it can be used to define white balance, only in this way, they can be separated from the white balance information carried.

Gray Focus 300

18° Gray Card and Focus

Gray Card, - generally refers to 18% reflectance gray card. Since the camera exposure is based on 18% reflectance, we use the gray card metering to get the correct exposure. Another use of the gray card is to define the white balance. Because of the correct exposure values mentioned above, the gray card carries the correct white balance information.

How to Fix WB In-Camera With a Grey Card

The exact way of setting the white balance in camera with a grey card might differ from below, depending on the manufacturers.

Check your camera manual or search on Google about custom white balance and specify your camera’s model.

  • Place the grey card in the scene;
  • Set the camera to manual focus;
  • Frame the shot so that the grey card fills the whole frame. Don’t worry about the sharpness of the image. It will work fine even if it’s out of focus;
  • Check exposure and adjust if you need to;
  • Press the WB button while turning the main dial until you select PRE.
  • Release the button. Press and hold it again until the letters PRE start flashing.
  • Take the photo of the grey card before PRE stops flashing.
  • That´s all! The camera has just created a WB preset based on the photo you just took.

In other camera models, you might need to take a photo of the grey card and then select it in the Custom White Balance as the reference image.

Exposure Measurement

White Balance Calibration

Here's how it works:

1. Exposure Measurement: By metering the light falling on the gray card, photographers can determine the correct exposure settings for their camera. This is especially useful in situations where the light may be uneven or challenging to measure accurately.

2. White Balance Calibration: Gray cards are neutral in color, and this neutrality helps in setting the correct white balance for a photograph. Photographers can use the gray card as a reference point for adjusting the color temperature of the image, ensuring that whites appear truly white without any color casts.

To use a gray card, you typically take a test shot with the card in the scene under the same lighting conditions as your subject. Then, during post-processing, you can use the values from the gray card to adjust exposure and white balance for the entire set of photos taken under similar lighting conditions.

Simple and sweet. Grey side for exposure, white side for white balance, folds into your pocket. I love it, clients love it, it helps in post production and on set. 10/10

As a photographer, I prefer to set custom white balance settings as often as I can and this little gray card has been great for that. I love that is large enough to quickly and easily capture on camera, even when working solo but fold up so small for storage. I started out with one to try it out and found myself always going to find it and move it around between bags when I decided that it would be easier and thanks to the price, very cost effective to just order a few more to keep one permanently in every bag to just make sure I always have one with me. My original one that is a few years old now, has held up perfectly and is in as good a shape today as the day I got it. Worth every penny!

I use this thing on every shoot... works great! I love how small it is so it's easy to toss in my bag and carry around. Using the AWB function on my Canon C70, it takes merely seconds to get perfect white balance/exposure so footage comes out looking exactly like it should no matter what environment I'm shooting in. Worth the few bucks spent to get great looking footage!

It's not perfect but it's not bad either. At such an inexpensive price point, it's hard to beat this. I accidentally bought two but kept both because the price and small size are perfect. I have one in my camera bag and one in a loose ends/backup bag for when I'm traveling on-set.On my GH5, this works just fine for setting white balance. I've tried with both the white side and the gray side and both seem to produce the same results.Plus, it's pretty fun to snap it open when pulling it out of its 4" x 4" bag. The quick and easy fold-up means it's perfectly compact and will fit in a camera bag, back pocket, or whatever other small space you have available (the side pockets on a camera bag work great).Clients also love it. It's something they can quickly hold and it seems like giving them something to hold while getting the frame set helps reduce their anxiety about filming.Get one. Given its low price, you can't go wrong. It might not be 100% perfect but it's almost perfect and especially so for the price it's at.

This a clever little product that meets my need perfectly. I used mine to perform custom white balancing in the field on my Nikon D600. It came in a small zip bag and pops open when you take it out. I mean Pop! It weighs like a feather and it's cloth over wire frame construction means it's very easy to set up against a tree or whatever in the field, set white balance, then pack it away. So it's both compact and under 4 oz., great for your gear bag in the field. The wire frame makes it less likely than a piece of gray card to blow away. The cloth means it's possibly cleanable as well. Just what I wanted for the field! Light, cheap, reliable, practical. My D600 read the grey face but not the white face.Here's how to fold it back up so it'll fit back into the pouch: Note that it is roughly rectangular with 4 corners. With both hands pinch two catty corners or opposite corners on the diagonal, doesn't matter which two as long as they're catty corner. Bring the 2 corners together so it's pinched together in the middle. You now have 2 corners together and it looks like a sort of butterfly shape. Holding the pinched corners with one hand, turn that hand inward towards you so the back of that hand faces away and the 2 "butterfly wings" face at you. Using your other hand bring the bottom wing up and into the middle so you can now pinch that lobe as well with the hand that has the middles pinched. Now holding all that with one hand, bring the other lobe over and down on top and, keeping it pinched bring it all together in the smallest size and slip it back into the pouch whilst keeping it all pinched together. A lot to write down for you, but do this once and it's a cinch forever!

Very cheap and easy to carry in your camera bag. Its a must to help get your white balance set before you start shooting your pictures. Most modern mirrorless cameras can use this handy device to set the white balance and help improve your pictures dynamic range and colors. This will reduce the time you have to spend when editing your pictures on your computer.

Okay, so this is NOT a PERFECT product, BUT it does the job. I've used this outdoors in the sun and indoors in a studio and compared it against a Spyder Checkr 24 for white balance and it is close. It was a touch too warm, but not bad. When I did the in camera balance for instance, the spyder resulted in 4300K, the Lightdow was either 4300K or 4200K sometimes, but for the convenience of getting a nice size target then folding it back to a 4" size and throwing it in the case, for around $8, really can't be beat. Yes, there are wrinkles in the gray area which can be made better by leaving it open a few days, and there looked to be some "microcracking" in the material on the gray side (it is a rubbery feeling coating) but at this point neither affect the balance in my tests. I did not have any black marks as some showed and the frame is still holding up, though I only used it maybe 10 times so far. For the price though, definitely a win. If it were $25 I'd send it back, but for the lower price I'll use it until something happens or it gets stolen and wouldn't feel bad dishing out another $8.

I'm not sure why I didn't have one of these. It should be in every camera bag.Stop relying on your camera's metering and WB reading and use one of these for more accurate results.And for this price, is kind of a no-brainer really.Gave it 4 out of 5 stars only because it popped out of it's pouch and made me leap off of the sofa, and it's a bit annoying to fold back up.Other than that, great purchase.I'm ordering a second one for a friend.
