This worked out perfectly for my diy USB pinball shooter. The spring provided is a little too tense for my liking, so I cut it down to 2 3/4 inches. It feels much better now. I designed and 3D printed the rack and pinion shooter mount, added a 2 phase rotary encoder and an Arduino pro micro. Now I have a fully functioning pinball plunger for my mini pinball cabinet. Files are on thingiverse if you want to make your own. Diy USB pinball shooter by ArcadeWorkshop.

I used this for Virtual Pinball, I don't know if it would work for a real pinball machine, as the shaft length is thinner and shorter than a regular pinball shooter. It works okay for my application, but the shaft is plated chrome or nickel and after moderate use, it starts to flake off. The shooter knob is wonky and looks stupid. However, this can be fixed by replacing the knob which uses a M8 thread. This unit retails for $22 USD. A Williams replacement costs $2 more and is of professional quality.

Not sure why they choose such a stiff spring, and now have to order a softer one (Blue)I believe they are color coded for stiffness.. This one is black, so what does that mean? Off the charts stiff?Example..Spring tension from lowest to highest:Blue (266-5001-05)Green (266-5001-04)Standard (10-148-1)Orange (266-5001-07)Purple (266-5001)Gray/Silver (266-5001-14)Red (10-148-2)

Doesn't take up much more room than a standard arcade button, but since I'm using it in a virtual controller and have all but halved the length of the main compression spring with limited results in force reduction, I'll likely replace the spring with a less stiff one to increase the life of the potentiometer it will be controlling.
