This is a really helpful book which we used for our trip to Sicily a few months ago.

I understand that guidebook publishers are facing an existential crisis in an age where detailed recommendations on every aspect of travel are easily available online. Also, although Lonely Planet guides were full of useful information, their physical layout was unappealing—dense blocks of words. So I appreciate they felt the need to adjust, in particular to make the page layouts less daunting, with more white space and sidebar pieces. However, they've gone too far in the other direction in this new Sicily guide. I had used a borrowed copy of the old edition in planning my recent trip. When it was announced that a new edition would come out a couple of weeks before my trip I rushed to buy it. What a disappointment! The amount of practical information has been greatly reduced. There are too many instructions to go to somebody else’s website for basic info. And I do not go to Lonely Planet for gushy “What I like about X†sidebars. I can imagine this new Lonely Planet Lite might be ok for planning the outlines of an itinerary (a la Rick Steves or Frommers), but once you are actually in the country the guide is simply skimpy. I found myself leaving it behind in my hotel room because it wasn't worth the extra weight in my backpack all day.

I have not traveled to Sicily yet. I found this guide to be very general. It is organized differently from other Lonely Planet guidebooks. It gives little information about transportation options, hours, prices, and what there is does not appear in the usual places. This is the most recently published LP guide that I have used, and I hope future publications about other places will not follow the same format.

I have been a devotee of Lonely Planet for decades, but this book was a major disappointment. Now granted, I got it only because I plan to visit Siracusa, but I found that section profoundly lacking in specific information. Very few restaurant recommendations, with little detail and zero information as to addresses. Ditto for hotels.I regret the purchase. I agree with a previous poster that this will be my last Lonely Planet.

Waar lonely planet normaal kleurloos is en vooral praktisch, is deze gids van hun echt mooi én ook nog eens heel praktisch. Perfecte combi!

I‘ve used LPs to plan trips all around the world for more than 20 years. I especially liked the detailed descriptions and the amount of information given. The new format has nothing of that - everything is shortened to a very brief overview. Restaurant recommendations? Well, sometimes - but of course no dish recommendations anymore. Opening times? Optional if at all. This also goes for most attractions… price range for restaurants or ticket-information for attractions? Obviously not necessary anymore…In short: after 20+ years & 50+ books this is the last LP for me as the new style makes the LPs useless for me.
