I have a 30 year old DVD VCR combo unit, new Samsung Smart TV. Took two minutes to set this up and it works as described. Set up was easy. Comes with all the necessary wires. Recommended.

It worked to hook up a Samsung Blu Ray/DVD play to a new Samsung tv that does not have RCA ports. It would not hookup with just HDMI to HDMI (it required the RCA to HDMI and HDMI to HDMI cords)

These convertors have to do a lot more than change the connector. They take the RCA signals and reformat them for use in modern TVs via an HDMI connector. The convertor with cables are all sensibly sized and connect easily. The picture quality, however, leaves a lot to desire. The VHS signal was understandably worse than the DVD. A comparison between the converted DVD picture with an HDMI DVD was clearly inferior. I'm not sure what to have expected. I upped the brightness to mitigate most of the problem. It does convert, though.

I'm writing this review simply to help temper expectations when buying a cheaper converter like this. This device is USB powered and works right out of the box exactly as you'd expect, so if all you're looking for is an easy solution, this is about as easy as it gets! HOWEVER, if you're planning to use this as your converter for a primary device, such as your main viewing TV, a retro gaming setup, or any application where image quality matters, read on.Despite being HDMI (very high quality) to S-Video (still reasonably high quality) connections, this converter suffers the same fate as seemingly all low-cost converters in that it adds some unwanted side-effects to the end result. This was all tested in 240p test suite with contrast/color calibration images. These are listed below:BLACK CRUSH - The entire image is quite dark, making dark scenes/content completely black, and lacking any detail. To remedy this, you'll crank the brightness up to near-max on your viewing device, which then causes extreme bloom on the lighter side of the contrast spectrum, while still lacking detail in the lower end.BLOOMING - This is both color blooming, making colors lack the same level of scaling detail mentioned for blacks/whites above (if something is red, it's BRIGHT red with almost a red halo around the image) Darker shades of the same color lack the detail mentioned about, looking black once you get past a certain point. Trying to remedy the darker side just ends up further blooming the lighter side.FUZZY - There's a lack of sharpness to the image, likely resulting from some sort of processing/compression but hard to say. It will not be as clean as, say, a direct connection to a media player / game console.Still, I'm finding use for this because it is simply a cheap, VERY easy solution to use a CRT TV as a PC monitor, and if that's your intended purpose, works just fine! Don't expect to be wowed if you're planning to use this for emulation via PC to CRT.

Effectively adapts an RCA output component (DVD, VCR, etc) to an HDMI input device (TV, monitor, etc. ) Only works in one direction, RCA to HDMI, not the other way around.
