I know what I'm talking about. This is a solid instrument. Intonation is near perfect once the bridge is positioned. Fret ends reasonably smooth. Tuners decent. Bound neck, top and back. Solid top. Has a nice tone and I haven't even changed the strings. If they put a label and serial number on who knows what they could sell em for? But for $100 bucks this is the one.

So, right out of the box, I could tell this was a great instrument. I have lots of ukulele and violin experience, with a little bit of experience with mandolin (still a beginner) and guitar (still very much a beginner). Just like my other Kmise instruments, I was pleased with the build and the balance of this one. Because I know a wee bit about adjusting instruments, I was able to get the bridge adjusted exactly as I like it, but a total beginner would probably want to take this instrument to a luthier or let a friend with experience adjust it for them. Other than that, it was definitely playable straight out of the box after a little tune up!I loved the accessory kit that came with it, because all of those things make playing a new instrument more enjoyable. The padded gig bag was perfect, and held all the accessories perfectly. For someone who is a beginner and looking for a great sounding instrument at a very reasonable price, I can highly recommend this. It sounds lovely, plays well, and is a good step up from your regular entry-level mandolins at the same price. I like this one much better than my other mandolin at the same price point - the build on this one is much better, and so is the sound.Overall, an excellent instrument for the serious beginner!

The mandolin has excellent string tension and vibrato, producing a bright and wonderful sound in melodies.

I’m primarily an acoustic guitar player of about, 40 years. I’ve dabbled in Ukes and such. That is how I came to Kmise. Based on a good amount of internet exploration, I bought a Kmise Banjo-Uke/ Banjolele. Once received, I was very impressed with the quality for price. The fit/finish/setup/sound were all very good. As a result and wanting to add a MANDOLIN to the stable of instruments, I purchased the Kmise MANDOLIN. I’m even more impressed with the mando on the value proposition. Some of the, “It’s a $100 Mando Stuffâ€:The fit and finish flaws are not apparent at a distance or with a cursory look. It looks good and the cosmetic flaws require a closer, more detailed inspection. The biggest flaw is the area on top of the soundboard directly below the “floating†section of the neck/fretboard. It’s noticeably rough at certain viewing angles. I’m not a fan of the way the pick-guard is attached. It is the one thing that feels “slapped-onâ€. The finish on the edges of the F-holes isn’t impressive. The fret wire ends aren’t as well finished as on the banjolele but, by no means do they make the instrument unplayable. Some of the “VALUE BEYOND A $100 MANDO STUFFâ€:It looks good and is well constructed. It has an adjustable truss rod!! It’s by and large well finished. Solid spruce arched top with a laminated arched back. Rosewood fretboard/compensated adjustable saddle bridge. It was immediately playable once tuned - and this is a big deal. Once tuned, I was able to identify slight action and intonation issues which i resolved in about 15minutes of fiddlin’. Once that was done the intonation is near perfect. The action is low and the tone is VERY good. It responds well to attack… a n d …I did not expect the quality of sustain on this instrument. There is a LOT of sustain.I’m only evaluating based on my research, especially those of luthiers demonstrating and setting-up Mandos of $400 and below. This one hangs.

The adjustable mandolin truss rod and compensated bridge allow players to easily adjust.

As a disclaimer, I have no experience with mandolins, but I do have guitar & ukulele experience.Out of the box, compared to my Kmise ukuleles, the case had some puckering in spots & the padding was very thin. Not a deal breaker, as I don't travel anymore. The mandolin looked nice out of the box. No noticeable blemishes at 1st. The f-holes had some spotty paint issues & there are some weird spots on the inside of one f-hole. Maybe paint?Tuning this instrument took forever & I'm still working on it. The tuning pegs are so tight, that every turn made me think I'd break a string! The tuning pegs are also super close together, but it looks like that's normal. I guess I just have fat fingers. The action is VERY high, both at the nut & the bridge. It does come with the tools, so I'll attempt to adjust myself & go to a luthier as a last resort.I found some free online lessons & did one before writing this review. This instrument did sound comparable to the one used in the lesson, so I think I'm off to a good start!I would recommend definitely, but be forewarned about the above issues. Wish me luck!
