I believe beginners can do these projects because my very first amigurumi had the same type of patterns, making leaves instead of wings, but throughout the many times that I ripped it out and started over, I learned and finally completed that pattern.My Experience with the Butterfly: Full ReviewOne of the most significant decisions when starting an amigurumi project is choosing the right type of yarn. The yarn in this kit is not typically used for crocheting, but it is perfect for beginners. It is thick, easy to work with, and does not pull apart or unravel. While I now use baby or sport weight (3) yarn for my amigurumi projects, I used the yarn from the kit for this particular project. I always use markers (the little clips) to help count my stitches.The accompanying videos are easy to follow, and I could pause when needed. They are broken down into nine separate videos depending on which section of the butterfly I was working on. The instructions for the pattern are displayed at the top of the screen just before the instructor demonstrates the stitches. (see photos). This feature allowed me to match the stitches I was working on with the corresponding part of the pattern, which can help with learning to read it (see photo). The kit also includes an introductory instruction booklet with pictures demonstrating the stitches. While none of the stitches in this pattern are overly complex for a beginner, it does require practice, which can sometimes lead to frustration. This frustration is normal—don't give up! For instance, when using the method shown in the video, I often had to attempt the magic circle four or five times before successfully starting my pattern. In my experience, the magic circle can be the most challenging part. Likewise, with this pattern, I restarted the antennas and wings at least four times until I got it right, and they are still uneven. It's just about not giving up and practicing until you understand the pattern and the stitch.I recommend starting with the butterfly's body; this allows you to practice the magic circle, the single crochet stitch, the increase stitch, the decrease stitch, and a color change. This approach enables you to unravel your attempts without losing too much progress. I also suggest stuffing the head after you are finished instead of waiting until the entire body is finished. The hole to stuff the head is small, and you'll have difficulty getting the stuffing in the head when the body is complete. (see photos). If you're struggling with any aspect of the stitching, like the magic circle, know that you'll discover many different methods for creating the magic circle and eventually find the one that works best for you. I did.Finally, counting rows to place limbs or wings accurately can be tricky. This is where your amigurumi will look unique, just like mine (see photo). Remember, your amigurumi will never look exactly like the professional's completed project, so don't be too hard on yourself if it looks different from the instructor's or the image on the package. I love the yarn the supplies that came with it, especially having several spare markers. The big sparkly eyes are a really cute touch, and kind of neat to see how those work, having seen them on a lot of toys at the store. The only downside is that the instructions are incomplete. There are two booklets, one with instructions to make the penguin using crochet abbreviations; the other explains what all of the abbreviations mean. Well, it's supposed to. Unfortunately, it doesn't explain everything. The instructions use the abbreviation for increase, but the booklet doesn't tell you what "inc" means or how to do it. I've started one other project like this years ago, and remembered enough to do it without looking it up, but I did have to look up "dec," or decrease. The instruction book said "dec" and the how-to book showed "inv dec," or invisible decrease. I wasn't sure if it needed to be invisible, so I ended up having to look that up. However, I really like this project overall and the blue penguin looks a lot like my son's favorite tv character. I have been able to figure everything out, and the type of yarn is great for beginners. I mentioned that I had started a project like this years ago. The reason I had not finished was because the yarn kept getting tangled because of the little hairs that stuck out. This yarn is not really yarn, it's like if someone took t-shirt material and turned it into yarn. No tangles, so easy. Even though the instructions missed a couple of steps, I still loved this project and plan to get more.

These elephants crochet quickly and easily. The supplies are great quality, and I especially like how comfortable the hook is to use. I have used the pattern with different yarn, and it's just as cute!

Ok quality yarn. The yellow was 2 pieces put together. I liked the printed instructions and pattern. The video wasn’t the best; it didn’t always seem to match the pattern.

This is a very good starter kit for someone wanting to learn to crochet, or for an experienced crocheter who just wants and easy project. All the supplies are included, including clippers(!) and well organized. The yarn is a stretchy synthetic that's smooth on the skin, which I really appreciate (I live in dry climate and crocheting is a winter activity for me, so there's nothing worse than yarn catching on my dry skin -- not a problem here!).I was very impressed with the quality of the instructions in this product. There is a lot of detail, the instructions are well organized with accurate, helpful photos, and the language is clear and uses proper grammar and spelling. This would be a great way for a beginner to start.The entire kit comes in a cute little box that's great for gifting or just staying organized.My only criticism is that the included clippers like to spring open, so much so that the cap doesn't always stay on, so that gave me some concerns, however they are very much an extra in this product (we all have scissors at home already). So just don't give the clippers to small children and you're good.I enthusiastically recommend this product and would purchase it again. I'll probably look for similar products from the same company.

This is a nice combination of crocheted animals. However, I would not recommend these kits for beginners. The instructions are easy to follow if you have been crocheting for a while and if you need any additional help videos are available, but sometimes they are difficult for beginners to understand. The kit comes with everything you need, including average quality yarn, subpar, but usable scissors, needles, eyes, stitch markers, and stuffing. The animals are cute when complete, and it would be easy to buy additional yarn and use the pattern to make more.

This kit was fun for my daughter and I to do together. We got the penguin kit and it included all the necessary materials to make two cute penguins! I liked that it came with yarn, eyes, scissors, stitch markers, needles, stuffing and a hook. I do crochet so I had extra hooks that we could also use to do it together. The instructions are clear and can be understood by some beginners, although I did have to help my 9 year old with some steps. The penguins turned out very cute and we were happy with the final product for sure. This is better priced than other name-brand beginning crochet kits so I would recommend it for sure!
