The pages have a perforated line for easy/clean tear. The squares are not a dark color; however, you can still see them in poor light. Cover page is of a thin material, not as strong as the back carton. Would recommend to reinforce the first and last spiral holes to prevent tear with constant use.

I like the small grid (5 squares per inch) better than the 5-star brand's (4 per inch). There is minimal to no smearing with gel pens, though there is some shadowing and bleed through with inkier pens. I also wish the cover was sturdier than card stock.
