The Mitutoyo Series 129 Vernier Depth Gauge, Interchangeable Rods, Micrometer Type, Metric, depending on the model, have a measurement range of 0 to 50mm, 0 to 100mm, or 0 to 150mm, and a resolution (or smallest graduation interval) of 0.01mm. (See the product catalog for information on accuracy.) The vernier scale provides precise measurements. These gauges include interchangeable 4mm diameter measuring rods (2, 4, or 6 rods included, depending on the measurement range) for flexibility in measuring range. The units have a ratchet stop for uniform pressure and a measuring rod clamp for stability. They have a satin chrome finish on the body for readability and the bases are made of hardened steel for durability and accuracy. They come in a fitted plastic case. Depth gauges are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering.

Depth gauges are precision measuring instruments used to determine the depth of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot. These gauges often take the form of sliders that travel on a measuring beam or rods, are moved to position by hand, and then adjusted with a calibrated screw. The base of the gauge rests at the top of the shape whose recession is to be measured, while the beam or rods extend to the bottom of the recession to determine the measurement. Gauge position is read from a graduated scale, dial, counters, or an electronic display.

Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and related systems. The company, founded in Tokyo in 1934, formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963 with headquarters in Aurora, IL.

I purchased the 129-111, which is the 0-100mm range. It was $161.26 at the time of this writing, and I'm surprised it wasn't at least $300 for the quality. The base finish looks perfect, and the micrometer turning is without a doubt the finest I've felt. (disclaimer, my other micrometers are stamped with CCCP markings, if that tells you something about the quality and age...). You can spin the head and let go and watch it make another full turn off the inertia. No binding or rough spots throughout the range.Compare that to the last 4 products I've purchased from Starrett, each of which I had to disassemble to clean out metal chips and dust out from the threads, which still have spots that bind. There are two things I dislike about the Mitutoyu depth gauge.1. The ratchet stop handle is plastic. In 20 years I'll still be using this same gauge, I'd be surprised if the plastic part lasts that long.2. The case is dumb. Yes, its plastic, which is expected. The problem is the layout. You can't leave any depth rod except the 0-25mm range one in place and fit the tool into the case. So every time you want to put it away, you have to change the rod out. More importantly to me, is that the case is roughly 40% bigger than it should be, most of which is just wasted space....as if our toolboxes weren't full enough. With that said, I still say 5 stars. I honestly expect Mitutoyo to put Starrett out of business in the next decade.

I work with a lot of metric dimensions. This is great.

I've been using this about a month now, it's well made and very accurate, it took a little while to adjust to being able read accurately, would buy again! Mine just came with 2 depth gauge rods, I've just used the one also the case hinge on one end was broken but not really an issue to me, it's still a quality measuring tool.

Fit and finish is absolutely flawless. I honestly don't trust brands of any tool- I assess every tool I buy by quality of item across companies- but only Mitutoyo has given me serious quality every single time. Their depth mics are really well made. There is an almost optical polish on the base- you want accuracy, you might pay for it, but Mitutoyo will give it to you here. This company is quickly making Starrett look like overpriced junk by comparison.

The product I received did not come with all the different rods. It only came with one.
