This is a well built trap, great for catching raccoon, coyote's, possum's and other small game. However, I bought it for catching a large snapping turtle in my pond and I think a trap specifically built for catching turtles would be a better option in this case. On the plus side, I can use the trap for catching many other animals besides turtles, so I'm still happy with my purchase.

This item came quickly and just as described. It's a nicely made trap that works well.

The trigger is quite sensitive. have to set it in the water, then set the latch. Bait door at the back is indispensable.Unfortunately my turtles haven't gone in it. All my catches have been on a trot line. No worries. I have plenty of land predators and I think most of them will fit easily in this great big trap.

Pond infested with snappers. What with the hot weather/warm water recently, their metabolism [and ill-natures] jacked-up and they began to eat my PET DUCKS. Therefore ::: turtles must die! Trapped three big suckas in one week already. Making Emeril LaGasse's turtle soup right this minute.Note: no 'bait bag' is enclosed. For baiting:A) Go to your local 'everythings-a-buck' shop (or w-mart, if that fails) and get some wee zipper bags for machine-washing your 'dainties' in.B) Go to your hardward store and get some long (12-in-"or-so") Zip ties (aka 'cable ties').C) Go to your local seafood shop and ask for some ('free') fish heads and/or other remains.D) Put fishheads in zipper-bags and secure bag to inside of trap with zip ties and set trap at edge of pond. (Leave plenty of 'slack' so the turtle will have leeway to thrash around yanking on it, thus TRIPPING THE TRAP, eh.)E) If you may wish to eat your turtle (or rehome it, if you are the tender-hearted sort), make sure part of the trap sticks up out of the water so it can BREATHE till you retrieve it.)F) Tie a rope to trap and other end of rope to tree or whatnot so turtle does not 'take off' inside your Very Spendy trap, eh!This is a 'one-turtle-at-a-time' trap, but it is MUCH sturdier than the net/hoop model. Which is good, as we will be setting it out off and on for a week or two for the foreseeable future, in case once this lot gets cleared out, some more move in (or the babies grow up).

I bought a Model 404R one year ago and after having it in the water for about 6 months between this year and last, it is extremely rusted to the point I’m not sure it will last through this summer. Should be made sure it was either aluminum or galvanized. As a follow up, I have now spoken to the seller and was informed the trap shouldn’t stay in fresh water for months at a time. I have galvanized Have-A-Heart traps that have set outdoors year round for years and are still as they were when I bought them. Make sure you buy a trap that is either galvanized or aluminum so you can use it as intended.

EDIT : 1 star to 3 StarsAfter speaking with the manufacturer there is a way (not convenient) to bend the hook which controls the sensitivity of the trap. While this does make the trap more sensitive it makes setting the trap far more frustrating. That being said we caught 2 turtles immediately after making this adjustment. Now however, getting the turtles OUT of the trap is more frustrating too. There REALLY needs to be a latch where you can lock the opening and prevent it from shutting so you can dump the turtles out without having your finger so close to said turtle.(Original review) The product does not work at all - all we do is end up feeding the snapping turtles.First : YES we know how to set that trap. We have tried having the end on dry land, partially submerged, and barely touching the water. The Bait is taken but the trap does NOT go off.Second : We set the trap so we can barely touch the trap without it going off but still cannot catch the turtle.Third : We secure our bait to the back of the trap with multiple hooks, tie the bait to the back of the cage with fishing line and bracelet wire - the bait is always gone but NO turtle.Save your money - this is a scam.
