I wasn’t about to drill into my stairs for these. The overall design is complicated as well. It seems like it would work, but it’s a pretty complicated and invasive installation.

This stair lighting kit was relatively easy to install, works well, is very simple to configure, and impressive. It includes 10 light bars, the controller, a power supply, and wires and mounting hardware to install it. The wires are generous enough that the controller can be installed at the top or bottom of the stairs and reach everywhere. The sensors are another 4-5 feet longer than the light wires. The controller supports up to 20 lights so if you order more you’ll probably end up putting the controller towards the middle of the steps, as it’s unlikely the cords will reach all the way to the bottom from the top of 20 steps. Unfortunately I haven’t found additional light bars on Amazon to add, so we are using just the ten on a thirteen step set of stairs. Each motion sensor corresponds with the top or bottom, and when triggered the stairs light up starting from the side the sensor is set for. The delay between each light coming on after the previous one is configurable, from 150mS on up, so the minimum time to light all ten steps is 1.5seconds. The time the lights are left on for is also configurable with a minimum of 4 seconds before turning off in the same order they turned on.The sensors are both active so if you trigger both at once you’ll get lighting from both top and bottom going toward the middle. Triggering them again extends the time they are on. This means that if you walk from the bottom to the top then you’ll first trigger the bottom, then you’ll trigger the top when you reach it, and the lights will go out in order from the top, not the bottom. It’s a little unexpected at first, but it’s not an issue, just interesting. The power supply is a 12V 12A meanwell brand, so it’s good quality, reliable, and safe.I connected everything first to make sure I had all the pieces needed, then installed it by drilling 3/8” holes under each tread, putting the wire through, and screwing in the clips. There are plenty of zip ties included so cable management was good. I screwed the power supply and controller to the back of the second to top step, and everything reached risky. This is on basement stairs with access to the back so it was pretty straightforward. Installing on the main stairs would have required significantly more work. The wireless switches were easy to install, but didn’t include screws. I used drywall screws and they went in without a hitch.Overall I’m happy with the kit, but it’s pretty expensive for stair lighting and I won’t be purchasing another.

These lights are really, really nice, beautiful and do a great job of illuminating stairs once they are installed but they have a ton of complicated hardware and wiring. You will probably require the assistance of a professional if you are not experienced in electricity. I don't want to disparage this product because it is very well constructed and high quality but please be aware before purchasing that they are a bit complex to install.

Other reviewers have also talked about this product in terms of it being a bit complicated to set up. However, unlike some other products, there is a well done and explicit instruction book that comes with this product. It is only complicated in the fact that it takes a bit of planning the project out, because there are several pieces that have to be coordinated into a system. However, once you have gotten over this hurdle, the system itself operates flawlessly. I used this on a set of stairs going to the basement that are not always in the best lighting - even when the light is switched on. However, I don't even bother with the switch now because this system works quite well!

I love how much these made a difference with lighting up my stairwell. I had tried many different options over the years from a lamp on the landing to light pucks and more, and nothing worked as well or created consistent lighting, like these do! There are options of using on/off switch, motion detector, and there is a timer for how long the light will stay on after lit, as well as other options such as a step lights up as you walk up the stairs and the stairs behind you shut off behind you as you continue up the stairs. This does come in many pieces and requires some work to wire all the lights into your house's electric. Not a quick job but is well worth it!

As others have mentioned, you cannot alter the length of the bars. I ordered these to use on a steep staircase at night. Unfortunately, the bottom step has a deep drop, and it is very easy to lose footing during the day, but especially at night. The set-up is pretty simple, but you definitely need the right space for it. Fortunately, that was not a problem for me, and this light kit offers a nice ambiance overall. It works great for guests and children that happen to get up in the middle of the night, and it provides me with some comfort for their safety.
