I got this hoping it would tame the low end of my Alto. I had problems with my low Bb being about 30cents sharp compared to the rest of the horn (common in altos). I decided this would be worth the experiment. It arrived and I tried it out using various positions of arranging it in the bell. I found that putting it upright rather than parallel to the bell easily fixed the intonation issues while being very transparent to the tone. I play jazz and I thought these would only be useful in a more classical situation and that’s definitely not true. It didn’t hurt my tone or projection and didn’t really change much except it did fix intonation while also making the low stack a bit easier to play. For the price this is well worth the benefit I got from it.

I bought this filter/mute to improve the response, tone, and intonation of the spatula key notes on my alto. I definitely notice an improvement in my low B-flat - the response is better (small, but noticeable), the tone is less edgy, and the intonation is improved (the B-flat was sharp and the product helps flatten it out). As for the other notes, the effect of the product is marginal - B natural might have a better response, but not C or C-sharp. That said, I have found this product indispensable and have used it throughout my college career.

This is a cool "add-on" for the sax. For serious players, it is a helpful gadget. It's a semi-hard donut shaped piece of rubber, feels similar to the material used to make erasers. Depending on the angle you place it in the bell of the saxophone, it can adjust the tone of the lower register and change the intonation of the low C#, B, and Bb notes, as they tend to run sharp. If you place it directly fat in the bell, it almost becomes a "mute" in the sax and can flatten those low notes (a little much) but it can allow you to basically hit a low A on the alto sax. (probably a low Ab on the bari sax). I choose to put it pointing straight up in the bell halfway, parallel to the direction of the sax, and it gives me fairly stable intonation of the low notes and i can hit notes from low D down much easier with it. For most beginner or intermediate players, it might not sound or feel like it makes a difference at all, but it is sold for a very low price, and like other reviews have said, you really have nothing to lose if purchasing it and being dissatisfied. However, for advanced players or professional musicians, this is a great deal on a great item. This can probably be compared to "The Original Saxophone Donut Mute" which is another popular product like this, although I have not tried that. That product is more expensive and furthermore is not sold for alto saxophone on Amazon (only tenor), so I purchased this instead and was very happy. Also, for those with latex allergies, I am not sure if this product includes latex. My mother is highly allergic to latex so this was a concern of mine buying this. You can probably contact the company to find out the answer to this. I am never dissatisfied with Neotech products and this one does not change that fact. Note: I am a 10th grader in high school and an advanced saxophone student.

No change in volume or pitch was noted when setting this device. Like not putting anything.

I love the classic 10M sound but have always struggled on the lower end staying in tune. This totally eliminates this problem for me. I would advise to get only when you are having intonation or balance sound problem. (If it aint broke, don’t fix!)

I bought this for my son who is a jazz musician. He tried it, but does not use it. Said it really does not make a useful difference. It does fit in the horn and is soft so as not to damage the finish. It is only a few bucks, so if you want to try it, you have very little to lose.

I have one for my Alto also...it's impressive how much this simple tool softens the vibes and makes playing so much more controlled...my breath goes so much further and the sound is not snuffed but rather tamed....it does not make your sax quiet or deaden the sound...so don't expect to play in middle of the night un-noticed.... very worthwhile looking into....I truly love it...gj

I have been looking for an alternative to the aluminium mute I bought previously.Being rubber this item stays in position in the bell, reduces the opening and is adjustable. The best part is that people in the house have noticed a reduction in volume when I practice.Recommended for anyone concerned about noise levels.
