Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth are single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother finish than equivalent American pattern files. For Swiss pattern files the length of the tool is the length of the blade, not counting the tang, which is the pointed end fitted for a handle; for American pattern files the length of the tool is its entire length, including the tang.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

Here is how I rate my purchases:1 Star: The lowest score possible. Horrible. The product does not work or is not the product listed. When common sense tells me that this product shouldn't even be on the market. Zero positives.2 Stars: The product is not exactly as described, either appearance-wise or functionally. The product may still be usable but it’s very different to what was described. The product may have a few faults.3 Stars: Average. Nothing special about the product. Useful but not remarkable.4 Stars: The product is as described and functions well. There may be a few minor issues, but all in all, the product is solid.5 Stars: The product is amazing! I love it! This is the highest of the highs. I would recommend it to my friends, family, and the family dog.OK, This might seem a pointless review as I didn't use the handle for a file. However, this might give someone ideas about other uses for the handle.I bought a bug zapper for the balcony that I wanted up near the ceiling and didn't want a cord dangling below it. I bought some inexpensive chain. installed some hooks and up it went. The zapper is rechargeable and has to come down on occasion...It was a pain to put the small end of the chain through the mounted hook and I kind of wanted an old-fashioned outhouse style handle. This was perfect. The chain fit snugly into the hole, added a bit of gorilla glue and voila! A decorative handle. Its very well made and sure to last for years. Great price, too!

old school traditional wood file handle, works. Never really understood why buying files was one thing and buying the handles was another, and most times its a totally separate action, in that you generally can't get both at the same time from the same source. Of course you need handle to apply some force/leverage to the file while in use. Likely this same exact product could be have been bought well over a 100 years ago. It works.

For many years, when I needed a handle for one of my files, I would shape one out of scrap wood and be good to go...... however, now with the ability to get a quality handle, complete with a ferrule, for only $2 - I think my days of spending an hour or so of my time to make a handle are over. These are not perfect, but for the price they MORE than do the job. You could make your own, but for $2 and the time savings of doing something more fun than making a handle, the why would you???Highly recommended as long as they stay in this price range.

File seemed to "snap in" fine but after one use it came loose. Yanked it out carefully aligned then slammed it in again. Seems ok but not very confident

I love these handles. I’m buying more for all my files. They are handles and work great. For those who don’t know, put the file in the hole in the handle and then tap the butt end of the wood vertically on a concrete floor to allow the weight of the file to set into the file. This is how I keep from damaging some of my $20+ files.

The E model handle is much larger. This will need to be drilled out some for a good fit. 10 inch mill smooth.Lower cost than a E model handle.
