1.Size:Starter Kit

  • LENS COMPATIBILITY: The C5 has a clamp-on design for lenses with a 95mm outer diameter, without the need for rails. Included are also adapters for 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, and 82mm threaded lenses.
  • 2-STAGES: The C5 has a top drop-in slot for a 4x4 (100x100mm) filter, along with a side slot for a size 4x5.65. The kit includes one filter tray for each slot, and fits filters up to 4mm thickness.
  • DURABLE AND LIGHTWEIGHT: Combining aluminum and carbon fiber, the C5 protects filters while keeping weight a low 350g. Wind-reducing side slots also make it ideal for aerial platforms and gimbal use.
  • NO VIGNETTING: With its depth, the C5 effectively blocks glare and positions the filter as close to the lens as possible, guaranteeing no vignetting on lenses as wide as 15mm full frame equivalent.
  • COMPLETE KIT: All C5 kits include the holder, top flag, 4x4 and 4x5.65 filter trays, and a convenient pouch. It also provides adapter rings for lenses with 67, 72, 77, and 82mm front threads.
  • 4x5.65 FILTERS: In the cinema kit is a ND1.2 Neutral Density filter to create a darkening of the image by 4 stops. Also included is a 1/8 Black mist that reduces highlights and lowers contrast.
  • ROTATING FILTER: 1-5 Stops Variable Neutral Density filter darkens the image with a 0.3 to 1.5 density, allowing wider apertures. Fits in the 4x4 slot and compatible with motors.

FS ND

4x5.65" Full-Spectrum ND16 (1.2) 4-Stop

This neutral density filter creates a darkening of the entire image by 4 stops, allowing you to compensate for bright conditions whilst keeping your aperture, shutter speed and ISO where you need them. The Full Spectrum protection blocks your image from color-affecting light like infrared and UV.

Black Mist

4x5.65" Allure Mist Black 1/8

Black Mist filters add an ethereal glow around light sources while preserving the clarity of images. Get the cinema look that reduces contrast, blooms, and softens the light from strong light sources while smoothing blemishes without affecting color balance.

As a videographer for 6+ years, I've used many ND filters. Every variable ND I've ever used has had quite a noticeable color shift, and thus I've always avoided using them and stuck with fixed NDs . Once I heard about Nisi's True Color Variable ND system that supposedly has no color shift, I picked it up immediately. These test images were shot on the Sony FX3 with same ISO, aperture and white balance settings. Only the shutter speed was changed to match the exposure of the shots. As far as color, you can see from the test images I captured and the included color scopes, there is definitely a slight color shift in the warmer direction with the VND on. It is subtle, but I would not consider it "true" color as Nisi claims. The ND 1.2 filter does not appear to have any color cast and the waveforms line up almost exactly. Using them both together gives the same result as just using the VND.As far as sharpness, there is no significant loss in sharpness. I do notice a very slight loss in detail if I zoom into the images, but it is completely negligible in real world use.Final verdict:Great matte box. Very good build quality. Has that premium feel to it for sure. Being able to use both 4x4 and 4x5.56 filters with it is a huge plus. Definitely an upgrade over the Tilta Mirage which I returned because of the heavy color shift and no compatibility with 4x4 filters. Although this one still has some shift, it's probably the least I've seen with a VND, and is easily adjusted for in post (adding +6 to the color temperature in Premiere seemed to fix it close enough). The slight difference is worth not having to switch out filters constantly, so I'll most likely end up keeping this.Update: the screw to hold the 4 x 5.65 filter does not tighten enough to hold the filter. My filter fell out on the first use, and now its cracked on the side. I had to replace the screw with a longer screw.

I used this matte box for almost a year now. It sits on my camera most of the time because of the vnd. I am overall satisfied with it.Colour shiftThere is a small colour shift, it's minimal. When I do scripted work it doesn't matter since I balance with a grey card. When I shoot at outdoor events though, I set the white balance manually and see the colour shift there, easily fixed in post though.Main conSomething that I didn't see mentioned anywhere can be frustrating a bit. The main problem with this matte box and I imagine all those "mini" matte boxes is that there is no mounts for rods. At first it was mostly ok but now, I have to retighten the matte box to the lens often because it becomes loose. It dropped on the floor a couple of times, did not break so far but if I had to buy it again, I would search for something that can be secured more sturdily to my rig. I might drill the bottom and add a rod mount.Apart from this, I am very satisfied, having a VND that you can put on any lens quickly is very nice!
