Emotional Support Animals (ESA) provide comfort and support in the form of affection and companionship for an individual suffering from various mental and emotional conditions. An Emotional Support Animal is not required to perform any specific tasks for a disability like Service Dogs. Emotional Support Animals are not Service Dogs and are not covered under ADA laws and regulations. ESAs are no longer protected under the Air Carriers Access Act, only Service Dogs are permitted to Fly Fee Free under Federal Law. Consult your airline when booking to make sure you know the current requirements to fly with your animal. ESAs are protected under Federal Law by the Fair Housing Act, allowing a person with a disability to keep an ESA dog in most types of housing that have a “No Pets Policy.” A verbal or written request, along with a copy of a letter or prescription from the handler’s doctor, may need to be sent to the landlord. This certificate, when used in conjunction with a letter from your doctor (not included), will help identify your pet as an ESA. The certificate also clearly states your rights. The certificate size is 8.5 inches by 11 inches and comes with a registration to US Service Dogs Registry, email with link to registration.
