Olympus SmartMedia Card (64MB)

Amazon.com

Stop juggling multiple SmartMedia cards, and replace them all with a high-capacity 64 MB SmartMedia memory card. Olympus SmartMedia cards are compatible with any product that uses SmartMedia (3.3V). Olympus SmartMedia memory cards also make panorama pictures a snap by taking advantage of the panorama function in Olympus digital cameras.

This card worked perfectly and it has outlasted the camera that I bought it for. The price was right and the quality spot on!

First, let me say that I LOVE my Olympus Digital camera (460 D Zoom) and I love my Viking IntelliFlash USB Flash Memory Reader, both of which I bought... They are fantastic products, and for a beginner in the digital photography world, they are simple, yet offer speed and quality you will want to have as you get more and more involved in your hobby. I have bought a 32mb SanDisk Smart Media card, and I love that too. I decided to invest in the 64mb card because I started taking pictures at the higher quality selection on my camera. What I can't figure out is why my camera cannot select the higher quality mode when this memory card is in it. I am REALLY disappointed. Sure, I can take almost 1000 low quality photos with this card; I know that's amazing. But, I specifically bought this card for high quality (actually medium quality since it's only a 1.3 megapixel camera). I just don't understand why this wasn't stipulated in the product description.

Only gave this 3 stars because I don't know if it's actually an Olympus Brand Card. The old card I have says "Olympus". The picture shown shows Olympus. The description says Olympus. The card itself only says Smart Media. It fits in the camera. Until I have occasion to take a panorama I won't know. This card actually shipped to me from China. When I determine if it's really Olympus or generic I'll change this.

OK, so the olympus cards are a little on the pricey side, but you definitly get a quality product in return. So the price is the only real obstical preventing a five star rating. I got the card because it does support the panoramic function on my Olympus camera. Imagine that, the Olympus SmartMedia cards are the only ones that are compatible with the Olympus Camera's panoramic function. That said, its worth paying the extra money if you have an olympus camera with a panoramic function, but wait for it to go on sale, that's what I did.

It didn't take long after I purchased my camera to realize that the included 8MB card was just too small. Was undecided between 64MB and 128MB until I saw the price of this Olympus 64MB at Amazon. I think I'll still get another (few?) 128MB cards from other manufacturers, but this one Olympus 64MB card is just excellent (for panoramas). Don't really mind paying the premium for the panorama capability.

I was looking for a smartmedia card to upgrade the firmware of my Yamaha digital piano. Regular stores dont have them anymore, and a couple online orders were cancelled because the product had become unavailable. I received this one within 2 days of the order and it's working fine.

SmartMedia is sold under several brands. Olympus branded SmartMedia allows you to take "panorama" shots. Essentially, you take multiple shots while making sure to overlap edges. You then reassemble these multiple shots using the "Camedia" software that came with your Olympus camera. The difference is that when an Olympus brand SmartMedia card is used, your digital camera keeps exposure settings constant across these multiple shots; which makes for a consistent panorama when you reassemble the individual shots via your computer. This is a nice feature, but not a feature most of us use often; for example, on a recent two week trip, I took 220 shots of which only 12 were panorama. If you are going to purchase multiple SmartMedia cards, you might be able to do with just one or two Olympus brand cards - especially since they cost more than other brands. I use two other brand SmartMedia cards, and save my Olympus brand cards for when panorama shots present (since you can switch the cards out at anytime - unlike traditional camera film). Also to realistically determine what the price premium is, check prices for Olympus and other brand SmartMedia not only here, but also at other popular commercial sites.
