Install very quick. Plenty more f video references online. Slows tailgate down well: I’ve got a 5yr old boy and 9 year old girl. Let’s them open gate safely, highly recommend. White one looks great on my red ram.

Install was easy and fairly quick. The directions could be a little more clear, but if you think about it when you install it, it's pretty logical. Directions say something like, "put this spacer 3" from the end of the cable", but it's not as clear as it sounds. It's actuall 3" from a different point in order to work right. Don't worry though; it will become clear when you install it. Function is flawless and the tailgate moves smoothly all the way down. This kit is half the price of one of the big-name manufacturers and every bit as good, with nearly identical parts! My install was on a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic.

My entire experience with this Heavy Duty Tailgate shock was disastrous. I ordered it on Amazon which listed it as an “OMT Compatible with 09-22 Ram 1500 2500 3500 Pickup Tailgate Assist, Truck Tailgate Lift Assist Kit Compatible with 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 Dodge Ram”. I have a 2020 Ram 1500. It did NOT fit.This comedy of errors began with the initial delivery from Amazon. They delivered an empty plastic bag addressed to me and emailed me a picture of the “flat” empty bag saying they had delivered my order. I the had a long call with Amazon Support trying to explain that my order had not been delivered, I received an empty bag (and they had a picture to prove it). After arguing that, “No, I did not need to check with my neighbors, or around the outside of my house, to make sure it wasn’t “just” lying somewhere else”, they agreed to send a replacement. And then the real fun began.When I finally received it and began to install it, the first thing I noticed was that the enclosed instructions stated under a “Fitment” header that it fit “2009-2015 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500”. Before proceeding with the installation, I contacted OMT support to very it was supposed to fit my 2020 Ram 1500. I also told them that the nutsert included appeared to be too small for the slot the instructions said to put it in. The replied it was all the correct kit for my truck.I proceeded with the installation – or tried to. I had to deal with that the pictures in the instruction were all of a 2009-2018 Ram. 2019 and later is quite different. The tailgate latch post and cable bolt are recessed into the bed upright (and not on the earlier models). The hole on the tailgate hinge the instructions say to put the nutsert into is a slot and much bigger on my 2020 than what is pictured. I stated by installing the nutsert. I had difficultly because it did not fit snuggly in the slot and I had to tighten it considerably more than the 9 turns the instructions say before it became stable and ridged.I then moved to installing the Ball Mount, which the instructions said needed a 13 mm wrench. It wasn’t 13 mm, it was a 12 mm. This made me wonder if I should have gotten a larger nutsert and ball mount.I then moved to removing the cable bolt with the include torx wrench. That wrench did not fit, it was too big (T50). The cable bolt was a T45. I had to stop and go buy a T45 socket ($6.00). It wouldn’t have mattered if the included wrench had fit. It was too short to remove the cable bolt. It was so tight (with locktite) that I had to use my impact wrench to get it out.I finally got the ball posts in and started putting the shock on. I rubbed on the bed upright and pulled the rubber gasket off it. When I finally got it on and tried to lower the tailgate for the first time, it immediately pulled the ball mount and nutsert out of the slot on the tailgate hinge. The slot was so wide that only the very tips of the expansion arms on the nutsert had any purchase and two of the four immediately folded in.I removed the shock, boxed up all the pieces and threw it in the trash! That’s my advice.

Instructions are clear, so all went well, no problem with installation, until the final check. Closed the tailgate and opened it and bam, the end the hydraulic rod separated, it must have been threaded just enough to keep it on until testing. No huge problem, I took the hydraulic rod off, removed the end from the tailgate and screwed the end back onto the rod properly, then reinstalled, Quality control problems?

Easy install and works as advertised. Super happy how it turned out. Buy one , you'll love it.

Updated review. Spoke with the company and they sent replacement. Installed it correctly and it has been working as described.Loved the product initially, my Ram tailgate is heavy! I wanted the lift because I was always worried about my kids getting hurt opening the tailgate. Well, today it almost happened, but it was because they were used to it opening slowly and the tailgate freely fell open. The little part you screw into the tailgate had broken loose and so there was no connection to the shock. Could have been real bad. I loved it until I didn’t.

They work a little slow because my tailgate is lite, but no more tailgate slamming down.

It worked well at first but after about 10 months the oil in the strut leaked out and the rod bent and is nonfunctional. The vehicle it was on is used only to tow our camper and is rarely driven so it didn’t see a lot of use before failing.
