This tool is so easy to use and effective that I am absolutely shocked I’ve gone so long without it!!! I ordered this when a different shrimp cleaning item got lost in transit. I’m a huge fan of Oxo (just check my kitchen drawer!) and took the leap when I saw it was available. I put it to work on two pounds of shrimp as soon as it was delivered and it was brilliant. The task was done in no time at all and I didn’t once worry about cutting myself as I do with a paring knife. It is well made, easy to use and clean, and not as pricey as other deveining tools.

Up until now I've mostly bought fresh already cleaned shrimp, but there was a good sale on, so I bought the uncleaned shell-on variety last week. I had forgotten what a time-consuming pain the butt job the cleaning, deveining job was. Also, the deveining needs to be carefully done if using a knife.I noticed that the same jumbo size shrimp, even after cleaning them at home, were bigger and more plump than those already cleaned by the fishmonger. My thinking was that when the shell-on shrimp got close to their 'sell by' date, the seafood guys would clean them and folks would buy them (as I had done many times) for convenience.Fresh is always better, so I looked at shrimp cleaning and deveining tools. This OXO tool is a winner with a hidden blade, so there's less chance of injuring yourself than many of the other choices which may save you a small amount of time at the risk cutting yourself.

I've been using a bird-beak paring knife to clean shrimp for the past few years because it seemed to work the best. I'd tried the fork-tine hack, but that just crumpled the delicate shrimp meat. But, there was always a caution using the knife because the slippery and wet shrimp, didn't want to have an accident and get cut. I saw this tool on Amazon and the reviews made a lot of sense, both ease of use and safety-wise. I got it and wow, WHY didn't I know about this sooner? This well-designed and easy to use tool makes taking the shell off shrimp so easy and less damaging to the shrimp meat. The metal tip easily allows me to access the end of the vein. I learned a great method to pull out the vein intact: you straighten the shrimp in your hand, then grasp the end of the vein at the head end, and gently pull it straight out - it usually comes out in one long piece that way. Sometimes it breaks, but most of the time this works well. This tool also allows me to clean shrimp much faster than I did with the bird-beak knife.I also discovered another use for this tool - for using oranges in fruit salads, jellos, pies, popsicles, etc., I don't like having the skin that covers each section of orange. After peeling an orange, I pull apart the slices, and now they look like shrimps. I run this tool across the top of the section and cut it open, and that skin just unwraps from the section, and exposes any seeds to remove, and leaves you with all the juicy tender orange pieces to use. I'm sure I'll find more good uses for this tool, but it is handy, well-made and comfortable to hold. The rubbery grip also keeps it from slipping in your hand. Great tool!

This is a great tool that makes cleaning a batch of shrimp easier and faster. I like that it is small, easy to grip, and easy to maneuver. The only thing I would change is to make it a little sharper. I find I have really tug, half way in, when cleaning larger shrimp.
