This is the third of these I've purchased over the last 20 years or something. The first, it had just gotten super scaled up from very hard water, and I finally just replaced it years ago, though everything worked fine. This last one, I actually only got another so I could have one be out of service for me to clean while another was out working. So I have two. They've all been more or less identical over the years. That said, I obviously really like these things. Relatively quiet, cats like them, super simple design, all good. The ONE thing, though, that I weirdly really like is this: when you need to refill it, you just pick up the water tank, carry it wherever you've gotta go to fill it (for me, the filtered water spigot in the kitchen), and then carry the full thing back to the unit and slide it back onto it. No tools, no water hookup, you don't even have to shut off the unit/pump, nothing has to come apart. Just haul the thing, it holds a fair amount of water, and for me, I maybe fill it a little more than once a week. Because...I like having this water a few rooms away from my kitchen, and you just need somewhere with an outlet.Overall it's just easy that way. And easy and simple assembly. I've never yet had a pump go out, and that's 24/7 for many years. The filters are simple. I'm not super great about keeping them replaced, cause I instead just make sure there's always fresh, filtered water that goes in, and then as I said, I rotate them (now) in and out of service to clean all the plastic pieces.

I have 2 cats, one being a kitten who LOVES water. I had the old Drinkwell for many years (the pale powder blue version) and loved it. I had tried many different kinds of fountains before but they'd always grow mold, burn out, or get clogged. The Drinkwell never did! I eventually got rid of it due to years of hard water stains - the water where I live is infamous for being super hard, and no matter how hard I scrubbed I was never able to prevent it building up in the spout and drinking bowl.I just bought the new unit and it is such a big improvement over the old version. It's quieter (not that the noise ever bothered me, it's nice hearing the soft sound of water falling!), and the capacity is awesome. I had the add-on resevoir for my old fountain but seemed to be filling it every few days. Now, with the increased capacity on the new Drinkwell I only have to fill it every other week. The best part is I can fill it while the unit is still running!I clear the small 'hair trap' every few days because I've read that if it gets clogged the unit can overflow. It takes literally 2 seconds to wipe any fur off the trap, so very minimal maintenance. With the old fountain I'd have to claw hair right out of the little motor directly, which was gross: I much prefer cleaning the trap to digging hair out of a small motor propeller. After a month of use this unit *seems* to stay way cleaner than the old unit did. I've taken it apart once and it was very easy to clean, especially since the cord comes apart and you can remove the motor to clean underneath it (unlike the old model). This means I'm more likely to pick it up and take it to the sink to scrub! I also love that it all comes apart and there are no weird little corners to scrub. The old unit was pretty much one big piece, meaning I never felt like I was able to get into the nooks and crannies to thorougly scrub. Those areas are where the hard water crusts built up the most, too. It'll take a couple years before I start to see whether the new unit remains hard water stain free, but so far so good!I would recommend you buy a good rubber mat with a high lip around the edge to put underneath this fountain. My cats love pawing at the water as it's falling, which leads to lots of splashes and puddles on the ground. The mat stops this water from ruining my wood floors. It's also handy when learning the best angle to tip the water resevoir when you take it off to refill. It takes a few tries to get the hang of, so you will end up spilling a little water your first few refills. I hold the water tank over the water bowl to catch any drippings but after a couple refills I feel like a pro and don't spill any water anymore. My one very minor complaint is the shape of that water tank. I, like others, don't like that it doesn't have a flattened bottom. When I refill it with fresh water I'm stuck holding the tank, I can't just put it down in a sink and let the water fill it. But honestly this isn't a big deal at all, I just have to hold it as it fills up. I can deal with that! When I had the old unit, I didn't bother buying the customized Drinkwell scrub brushes. I'm sorry that I didn't because I believe this is why I wasn't able to prevent the buildup of hard water, because I didn't have anything that could get into all the nooks and crannies. So when I bought this new unit I did buy the brushes and now regret it! The new unit comes apart completely, meaning that I don't really need specialized scrubbers to properly clean it. I think you could use any sized scrubber and you'll be able to get this fountain spotless. So if you don't have the extra cash for brushes, don't worry, hit up a Dollar Store and get some cheapie scrubbers instead! If you can't decide whether to get the old Drinkwell or this version, GET THIS VERSION for sure! The improvements aren't major but they did address all the small 'this thing is great but I wish that they'd done this small thing better' concerns I had with the old fountain. I would also STRONGLY recommend you buy a Drinkwell over other brands of fountains, even though it's more expensive. The cheaper fountains only last a couple months before they clog, break down or get so icky dirty that you can't bear to watch your pet drink out of them. I've tried almost every brand on the market and the Drinkwell is by far the best designed, most durable and easiest to maintain. It is absolutely worth the extra money. One last note for fellow Canadian customers: Amazon.ca doesn't stock the same products as Amazon.com does, it focuses pretty much only on books and movies. I often shop in the US store instead because their product selection is so much better, however a lot of the time they're unable to ship certain products to Canada. I was amazed they were able to ship me this fountain which is a rather large item! Even better, it literally arrived within 2 days even though I didn't pay extra for fast shipping. I didn't get slammed with extra duty or border fees. This fountain was over $30 cheaper from Amazon.com than any pet store within Canada so I saved HUGE money!

I bought this for my mom who has 4 cats and a smaller indoor dog. This is far more animals than the fountain is designed for, but I'm sure a lot of people thinking of buying this probably have more than the 2-3 cats it is designed for.The good:-The cats seem to drink more water than they did when they only had a water dish out. A couple of them also prefer to drink the water as it pours out. As long as you keep the water fountain clean your animals will love the water. Well, I don't think the dog cares either way, but the cats like it :)-If you care for your cats this is a worthy investment. Even with the problems I point out below I still think any cat lover should try to make this work. As long as you clean the fountain regularly and remember to fill it before it goes dry you shouldn't have any problems with the pump failing.-I've had this fountain for a year and a half with no problems with the pump yet. There have been more than a few occasions I've noticed it was running with close to no water, or went for long periods without being cleaned, yet it's still pumping water strong!-Safe for the washing machine, everything can go in the washer except for the pump itself. This makes cleaning a lot easier, but be careful not to lose any of the smaller pieces. The not-so-good:-I have to clean the water fountain for my mom. She would likely lose most of the smaller pieces if she did it on her own, and I know she wouldn't be able to put it back together without help. For some people re-assembly won't be difficult at all, but for some it will be impossible - it just depends on the individual.-Requires frequent cleaning, (every 2-3 weeks). If you don't clean it...it gets gross, I mean really gross. If you let it get too bad algae will begin to accumulate, which breeds more disgusting things. At one point I hadn't cleaned the fountain or even changed the filter for over a month. I then I went to change the filter and noticed small worms all over the filter and within the fountain. I ended up hand cleaning it with bleach and using Q-tips on the pump to get all of the algae that was accumulating on all of the parts. This only happened because it hadn't been drained and washed for some time, so as long as you clean regularly this shouldn't be an issue for you.-The reservoir is fine for 2 or maybe 3 cats, but those who have more animals would gladly welcome a larger reservoir. Another small issue is that the reservoir cannot stand on its own when filling it with water. This isn't a problem for myself because I can easily hold it with one hand, but my mom can't do that. They really should have designed it to stand on its own while filling it with water.Advice to keep clean:-Keep this away from any food dishes. Cats tend to go straight from their food dish into the water dish, and usually drop pieces of food into the water fountain.-Keep away from indoor plants. My mom has a lot of indoor plants and always puts them near the water fountain. I end up having to clean it more frequently because of this. If you keep plants away from it it stays clean much better.-Buy lots of extra filters, and buy them online where they are cheaper!! Depending on how many animals you have you might need more or less, but with 4 cats and a dog using this I usually replace it every 3-4 weeks.Overall:As I mentioned previously, if you care for your cats health then the additional cleaning tasks should not be that big of a deal. Once you clean it a few times you get used to it and its not that big of a problem. But for some people they might want to give this task to their husband or son - someone that's good at taking things apart and putting them back together. If you don't clean this it will become filthy, depending on how many animals are using it, so make sure you clean every 2 to 3 weeks. You might be able to go a little longer if you only have one or two cats.I hope the negatives that I and others mention don't scare you off from buying this fountain. This really is a great device that your cats will love to drink from. Many of the negatives are really caused by a lack of basic cleaning. Your cats (or dogs) will love the fountain as it will be far better than drinking from a static water dish!

The pump stopped working within hours. Not sure if it’s manufacturing defect or power outlet issue but yes, unable to use thr product here in India. No place to even get it repaired.

I got this originally for an older cat and a younger one who was fascinated with running water. It became a hit for the both of them, although neither drank from the stream itself. There's no appreciable noise from the fountain as long as the water levels aren't getting low, especially at 5m+. Given the ambiance of my living space, it's absolutely silent.Weekly cleaning is a must, with recommendations being every 4-ish days. The water reservoir can keep everything topped up for about that long. While running water doesn't collect slime as fast as standing water, even 5-7 days will see a film forming. Cleaning is fairly straight forward. The unit itself (unlaiden with water) is rather light. There's no good ways to pick up the unit though without risking it falling unless you lift it slightly and put your fingers under the base. Not the most comfortable option as weighed down by water it can put enough pressure on your fingers to dig in a bit with the sharp edges. Filters do last 2-4 weeks, so changing monthly is ideal. The pack listed as a common buy along with the fountain will last you quite a long time.Refilling and placing out on the floor is best done on site rather than at the tap, with a couple of trips necessary to fill it enough. The alternative of carrying a fully filled fountain could result in it slipping out of your fingers or just spilling as the water line for "full enough" is pretty close to the top edge. Filling the water reservoir and putting it into its place on the back of the fountain will yield enough water to mostly fill it in one go. A second trip will finish it off and leave you with enough water to last the 4-5 days to the next clean out and refill. My remaining cat is a medium hair domestic with moderate shedding and the pre-filter gate/screen will sometimes clog slightly. Another reason to get to the clean/refill more often. If it was left longer, or left uncleaned, I could see the issues others have noted about the fountain overflowing. All in all, it's a good product if your cats prefer running water and don't like drinking from a standard bowl. Cats do prefer running water anyway. But on top of that, it's great if you're a pet owner who doesn't want to refill water bowls daily to keep them fresh. You don't need this, which is why I rate this a 4 for value for money (on top of the harsh plastic edges), but it's definitely nice to have.
