I'm relatively new to fluorocarbon leaders for fresh water fishing. Generally 4-lb, but also 2- and 6-lb depending on circumstances. I started with small spools of Leland Phantom, then tried Seaguar STS. But I find I'm more likely to get a strong, reliable knot the first time with the P-Line Shinsei. I do test my knots rather aggressively before fishing with them. In fairness, I haven't lost a fish yet using any of these, but for my knot-tying skill level the Shinsei is noticeably better. As with any FC line it's important to use saliva or a better lubricant (like K-Y) to avoid damage. The Shinsei is more expensive, but there may be a reason for that, and I don't use that much anyway. It also comes on spools small enough to carry in a tackle bag or box, unlike the huge STS spools.

P-line products are top notch. I use this leader for crappie and walleye in 6lb in conjunction to 8lb braid.

This is such a balanced leader material. I absolutely love how it performs. I bought the 30lb to use for striped bass fishing from the surf and I'll be picking up other lb options for other types of fishing because of the value and quality.

The 12lb test I got is smooth as silk and stronger than any other flouro I ever used. The other day, a 400 pound seal lunged onto a 2lb mackerel I was catching for bait, and, vertically from a 20 foot pier, I was able to tussle and manipulate with my 6-12lb rated rod until the mackerel wriggled free from the jaws of the beast. Without retying, I fished the same leader the rest of the night, no issue. Best

I flyfish and guide 5 days a week spring thru fall. Shinsei is a bit thicker/stiffer than other flouro tippets - but it also tests about 50% stronger and more durable than the others, even after being scratched up on rocks/teeth/etc. I've used it exclusively for the past 4 years but ran out on the last trip so had to use Orvis flouro - and it sucked comparatively.You can get away with going a bit thicker with this tippet because the fish somehow just don't see Shinsei (PhD fish in gin-clear stillwater tested). It really is more transparent to them. Also it doesn't get kinked/corkscrewed/stretched nearly as easy as other tippets. I like that the extra stiffness turns over flies better when casting and keeps it from bird's-nesting as easily.It's become my go-to tippet material and I feel compromised without it.
