This flute/Kaval hits notes in several octaves. It’s a little temperamental, but once I figured out the best breath pressure on the various notes (so it wouldn’t flip octave when I didn’t want it to), it was enjoyable to play.I ordered the “size D” flute/Kaval, and it says “D” on it with sharpie (or something like it), but it’s actually in the key of C. That doesn’t bother me too much, but it’s not technically what it was supposed to be, and I would have preferred a D, like I ordered. The wood is nice. The finish is nice. The case could for sure use some more padding inside. The case is much longer than the flute, and there isn’t anything to hold the flute in place, so it’s just loose in there and the flute/kaval easily hits the ends of the case if jostled. This is going to damage the flute/kaval before too long! I’m going to have to modify the case myself, so the instrument is safe. So I’d say - plan to potentially modify the case or get something else for the flute/kaval to travel in if you order this.Tip: the flute can be oiled inside, but that can also change the tone and the way it plays/handles.Because of the case issues, and the tuning being wrong, I’d give this a 3.5 if I could. If the case was ok and the tuning was correct for what I ordered, I would give it a 5 for what it is.

I ordered the "C" key instrument. It's beautifully made, and comes in a stunning wood box, with hinges and clasp. Presentation and build quality is 100%. But...I ordered it to play music, not to put on the wall. So that's really the more important part.As far as playability goes, it is fine. The notes are clear, and I could get almost two octaves. There is no fingering chart, so I'm sure I can get a full two-octave range if I figure out the fingering for the last few high notes. Because the holes are all in a straight line, fingering should be done with the pads on the first finger joint (like a bagpipe), rather than trying to use the fingertips, especially for the right hand.I pulled out my trusty digital tuner, and here are the notes I get, from the low to high of the first octave:A (30 cents sharp)Bb (30 cents sharp)C (20 cents sharp)D (10 cents flat)Eb (40 cents sharp) - if I cover the bottom 3 holes it is dead on EbF (20 cents sharp) - if I cover the bottom 3 holes it is dead on FG (20 cents sharp) - if I cover the bottom 3 holes it is close to GA (40 cents sharp)Bb (dead on - no holes covered)Going by that tuning, this is close to a Bb flute, with one note (A) below. But I ordered a "C" flute !? Also, there is quite a bit of variation between the notes, and in general, even as a "Bb" flute, it's quite sharp. So this might be a very good flute if you intend to play solo, or if your accompaniment is a Guitar, which can tune to your flute. But for harmony with other instruments? I can't see how that is possible.
