From the Manufacturer
Porter-Cable Forstner bits have optimized cutting angles for flat bottom holes. The have and open tooth design that drills clean fast holes and creates a fine smooth finish. These bits are made of hardened steel for durability and a long service life.

I am giving these 5 stars based on the price. Sure there are better forstner bits on the market, but they come at a much higher cost. As far as drilling smooth holes, these bits perform great. I guess the real question is how many smooth holes can they cut. I can't answer that now but I have used the 1" and 1-1/8" many times with great results. I typically use them in my lathe, but also in my drill press when necessary. Most of the wood I drill with forester bits are hard woods, so they have been put to the test. They cut great and clean out the shavings really well too. I just make sure to take my time and back the bit out a few times to cool things off and clear out the hole and the bits have no problem.

I have found these to be decent import quality carbon steel bits at a very good price. All of the bits have respectably sharp cutting edges and have worked well in the maple and pine that I've used them on so far, leaving nice smooth, clean holes with only a tiny dimple remaining in the bottom center. Using a drill press on low speed and a very slow, even feed rate seems to work best with most of these bits. Especially so with the larger 1-1/2", 1-5/8", 2" and 2-1/8" bits. For these larger bits PC recommends 500-RPM in soft wood and 250-RPM in hardwoods. The advertising blurb on the package says that these bits are over a $200.00 value when purchased individually. Even though it may be based on retail pricing, that claim may be a little bit of an embellishment on Porter Cables part. They are very nice, but IMO, this is not a $200.00+ set of forstner bits one way or the other. The storage case that comes with these is also pretty decent and holds the bits securely while preventing the cutting edges of the individual bits from contacting each other. Even though mine was in the original factory sealed blister packaging, I noticed that the bottom already had some rather deep scratches and scrapes, probably from being caught on a conveyer belt or skidded across the factory floor in China, on its way to final packaging. This isn't an issue for me as I couldn't care less, but if you're picky about that sort of thing, it may be problem for you if you purchase online and can't inspect before buying.Overall, considering how well they have worked and the price I paid here on Amazon, I'm pleased with this set, and have no problem recommending it.

Edit: 2023, (5 years later) and these bits are still making chips in my hobby shop. Just bored a bunch of holes in purple heart for some door handles and I was surprised how well these are still doing. Used a drill press, slowest speed setting and just put 2 fingers on the lever and let the bit do the work. I see no downside to owning this set for a hobbyist.Great bits! Just take it slow when using these and they will go for a long time. Have had no issues whatsoever going through oak with the largest bits in my drill press. After multiple holes in various woods with the same size bits over and over the shavings come out in continuous curls. Bits seem very true and straight in my press and don't wobble and aren't off center. Would definitely buy these again if they were every list or damaged.

I really love these. I love this style cutter. My first Forstner set. I just love them I like to use them in the drill press because I can drill with one hand and vacuum 98% of the debris with the other and still be as safe as possible. My first job was to put some large smooth holds in what looks to be a paddle right out of the movie "Dazed and Confused" You know the thing that jerk used to beat the incoming high school freshman kids with. It was actually a stir paddle for home brew. Everyone seems to think I was going to do some hazing with it though.Anyway nice even smooth holes in a jiff. The shop vac makes it a almost no mess thing too. Different story in the cordless of course. Some things just take 2 hands and I never seem to find a 3rd or 4th one laying around. I have used them for many other projects too.

I've needed a decent set of Forstner bits for quite a while, so finally just got these. Not sure why I waited so long. Quite impressed with quality and design.

I spent a little extra on these because I wanted a good set that would last a while. I'm really glad I spent the extra. They cut really well, even on a curved contour. The never walk, and very little tear if any at all. Nice clean holes.

Me gustan mucho.
