I am learning the sublimation process to put images on ornaments, mugs etc... In my initial attempts, I found that the final colors were very different than what I was modeling on my screen. In particular, my reds were coming out orange. This sent me down the rabbit hole of learning something about color management and needing an "icc" file for my printer based on my process. Commercial options were just out of my price range and so I took the chance on buying this colorimeter and then using open source software to calibrate my printer. The VincColor is very simple to use and out of the box gives the L*a*b* color coordinates that are needed by color management software. The 4 mm active area made it easy to measure the color test patches that I needed. While I had to type the values into the computer by hand, it really wasn't that painful and I learned a lot. While the English instructions and the display can be improved (especially for calibration), I found this a very handy tool that saved me hundreds of dollars over a commercial solution. My reds are now reds. For other hobby sublimation practitioners: Since sublimation requires a polyester substrate, I used a lamination pouch and laminated two pieces of sublimation paper back to pack. Cutting open the packet then gave me two separated test pages that I could heat press to. I'm using HIIPOO ink in a converted EPSON EcoTank ET-2760 with A-Sub paper. 385F for 60 seconds.

I compared color readings of two VINCKCOLOR Pro devices, both bought together. Following were my thoughts.1) I think calibration is non-functional. One would expect that after calibration via the same white reference cap the two devices would offset and/or scale themselves in such a way that at least the reading of the reference calibration cap would be the same on both the devices. But that didn't happen. The calibration made no difference. The color difference remained such that one device consistently read the same reference cap at 2% more L (i.e. brighter) than the other, which translated to dE00 of 0.86. Black calibration values were identical (zero).Thinking about it, it is such an unfortunate loss for such a wonderful device! Because it seems easily fixable error in software instead of hardware. I could consistently predict lesser color errors than the devices by applying 2-3% scaling to RGB values in my mind when comparing values between the two instruments.2) My second issue with this device, which is kind of related to the first issue mentioned above, is that the inter-instrument error claimed in the spec, 0.3 dE00 (average) seems either not right or kind of misleading. As mentioned above the dE00 of 0.86 was there right on the reference cap right after calibration. And the it even peaked further to dE00 of 1.20 around mid-greys and then tapered off to lesser errors in dark shades and blacks.I don't know if by "average" they meant the average between multiple instruments and/or the average over whole color space. Either way that "average" number didn't appear to hold for me for the two devices I bought on the same day.3) Other than the above mentioned two issues, I like the device. Repeatability was good for both the devices and near the specification of dE00 0.05 over short term. Also love that it can read the color values and differences without phone. The device definitely seems useful for relative color measurements and can consistently give the same small dE00 for color differences not distinguishable to eyes. However for absolute measurement of color values, I would not rely on this device alone. Instead I would use a reliable physical color reference card or book and would use this device to measure the color difference(s) from that absolute reference.

I read Azmat's review and then bought this, knowing the limitations. What you detect is definitely different from the actual color (see Visial Differences pic). But I figured maybe I could generate correction tables to achieve accuracy. That won't work, however, because the RED response is so squirrely (see % Error charts pic).No problem though, as my use for this is color matching. It means that I need to supply close colors (paint chips) and figure out best match with this device.

I exchanged the first of these. Second has the same problem: Impossible to download app due to Trojans/virus on their site (MalwareBytes would not permit after MANY attempts. Asked for 0$ to get your credit card(s) then rejected them. This is the WORST purchase (twice) I have ever experienced with Amazon Prime. Why does company require registration of software to be able to use purchased device? I must have got through the maze (long ago), but now can't use due to forgot password. No way to reset. Previous bad experience just gets worse.
