Along with the Humes and Berg "Stonelined" tunable straight mute for horn, the Protec Vulkan mute is an affordable option in the vast array of choices available for horn players, many of which cost 4 to 5 times as much as the posted Amazon price at the time of this purchase.The Vulkan mute is lightweight, and the material of the cone seems to be quite durable. The wrist cord provided is adjustable (Humes and Berg does not offer this, although it is easy and inexpensive to add a cord to that brand), and the tuning tube (inside the mute) is accessible and operates as well as in any pricier mute. The trademarked "Bell Bumper" is an excellent addition which will greatly mitigate the likelihood of small dents in the horn bell resulting from fast mute changes.The tone of the Vulkan mute is bright and somewhat edgy in louder dynamics, assuring it will be heard in the texture of the ensemble. In soft dynamics, it sounds distant and covered as expected. Overall pitch of the mute is excellent, pulling nearly imperceptibly downward in the heights of the top octave in my large-bell horn. Lastly, the low range of the horn is clear and in tune with this mute.The Vulkan tunable straight mute for horn is an excellent buy for school music programs looking for a set for advanced music requiring mutes as well as for high school and college students and busy amateur players. I bought this to use in the pit orchestra of a musical. It works well for sections notated as “muted†to soften the sound while playing as written. It is not intended for sections notated as “stoppedâ€, I had to do those with hand-stopping and regular stopped transposition. Overall good value for the money, lightweight, and worked for what I needed.

Bought one to stop borrowing from my school, now I both look the coolest and put my mute in the easiest of all the trumpets! It works really great and I don't have to worry about my trumpet getting damaged.

I like this mute better than the much more expensive carbon fiber mute I also bought. Notes slot easier with the Vulcan, and articulations are more pleasant. The corks are high quality. A lot of "bang for the buck."

We got this for our son, based on a musician friend's recommendation. My son likes it. It stays in place quite well. It extends out about 4-5 inches beyond the bell of the trumpet.While it is a mute, it only minimally quiets it down. It seems to be more for the tonal change than anything.Sharing so you get actual pictures of the actual item.Recommended

For the price, can't really beat it. It has pretty good tone and and intonation in all ranges, can get a little wonky in the lower register. It is VERY lightweight, almost like a feather and I like the looks of this mute, better than that ugly white and red. Cork is very strong too.

It is not as quiet as I expected, but definitely quieter than without! No problem with "back pressure" so playing is still easy. Trumpet still sounds like a trumpet, with slightly different tone.

I liked the look of this mute so ordered it online as in my move abroad, my mutes must have been forgotten or misplaced. I haven't had much chances to try them out, but it sounds good and looks good, nice and light and fits well in the bell of my trumpet.
