This is an advanced-level tool, and definitely not for beginners. It needs to be adjusted with a hammer (like the Japanese planes), and you should do a lot of test pieces before you start in earnest. The construction is solid, the set screws are a little fiddly but provide good grip. Ala in all this has a nice solid feel in the hand and I expect to get years of use out of it

The wood in nice and everything fits - sorta. Setting this up left handed {planing from left to right), as it comes, the mortised fence slid onto the guides smoothly. Trying it for the opposite way, right to left however, there was a problem with the guides on that side of the body being a bit over large. Nothing a few strokes with my Woodriver spokeshave (it fits in between them without having to remove the guides from the body), and a round rasp to one of the mortise's couldn't handle and quickly. The irons are, of course, in need of sharpening, but even out of the box they do cut fairly well. I would recommend a coat of paste wax on everything except, of course, the slot for the iron and where the wedge wedges into the the face of the iron. (Since Johnson's Past Wax is out of business and any leftover cans are priced as if they were made out of "Unobtainium", I recommend Min-Wax's Finishing Wax.)The shipping, while within the time frame stated, was, shall we say, less than spectacular in one sense as the wooden plough plane, with its arms already attached crosswise in the body, was sent in its store box with no heavier shipping box or other protective bubble wrap, etc., other than a single layer of a plastic wrapping paper around the box to protect it.

Overall, the thing is pretty good. Very solid feel to it. The blades are inconsistent and not uniform in any sense other than that they need time and patience to work to their best. Initially mine would cut like a demon. Smooth and square. However, it quickly developed a problem with the front set screw, (wing nut, and “L†rod) wouldn’ stay tight, the fence got out of parallel and messed up the cut. I notified the company and they promptly resolved the issue to my satisfaction. Offering two acceptable solutions, and asking what I might suggest in their place. Pretty good. With some wood, metal, screws, tools, and work, I fashioned a secondary fence that seems like it will keep the original in its place, or places once adjusted. There is a learning curve if refinement is what you want, but it seems doable.

This plane works acceptably well as a plough plane. The included blades are of a softer metal and although they sharpen quite easily, they also dull equally fast. Even so, the grooves created are accurate. I would recommend this plane to others.

This tool arrived in good shape. The packaging was torn. There was no effect on the product fortunately. It is a tool I will enjoy working with for a very long time, without raising the debt level!
