I often describe this thing to folks who haven't seen it as a fun new way to break an ankle. That's what I thought when I first saw an ad. Luckily for my son who asked Santa for one this year (he's 8) I actually saw & played with one first hand this summer when a teen brought one to unicycle practice. Don't assume I'm all that coordinated & athletic- I sit on a uni well if I'm next to a wall, and I roll slowly on the ripstick the same way! But my 8 year old got the hang of the stick in just a few sporadic trips outside this winter & he can't wait for warm weather. I'm not even worried about broken bones anymore (though I'll try to keep him off hills for a while longer yet- but he's only 8.)My brother & I (an out of shape 35 year old band geek chick) have a blast fooling with the thing too. I have no illusions of carving all over town- but I find it very fun. My brother & son have a blast on it & I figure it's well worth the money. I hear you'll want extra wheels if you ride hard (especially if you are grown... the kids don't seem to wear the wheels down as fast- less weight must make them last longer.) Eventually I may check into using old roller blade wheels like another poster suggested as a cheaper heavy duty replacement. If you're interested in this thing (or your kid is) go ahead & give it a spin. You have to work at it & I heard plenty of frustration for a day or two, but then it is fun, and the uniqueness of the ride is worth all the effort. Everyone should learn a super power. Try a ripstick.

My son saved his money to purchase the Ripstik. He has had it for about a month and loves it. He is 11 and has found it easy to learn. I was concerned about his safety, so I checked it out. Looked good. And so far, our experience is excellent. He has only fallen a couple of times, and those spills were minor. Note: He hasn't tried any downhill trips. He must wear helmet and pads - no compromise. We purchased back up wheels since others had noted they wear quickly. We have yet to replace them. Seems to be holding up well to my son's use, and as he shares with siblings and playmates. We have purchased another for our 13 year-old daughter for Christmas. If he is missing from the house, I can find him riding his Ripstik outside. Great fun!!

For some reason the Silver was available at a much better price than other colors but the item is identical to the red and blue versions. My son's 2 best friends have the other colors so it works out perfectly to tell them apart. My son was just shy of 9 when he got this and had no trouble using it. It appears to me to be as much if not more exercise and a lower risk to broken bones than a regular skateboard! They set up obstacle courses to navigate with the RipStik. Obviously they are not doing the "catching air" tricks at skate parks or shopping malls that one can do with regular skateboards but it has held his interest well.It appears well built, though I'm sure eventually it will need new wheels, just as Razor scooters, skate boards and roller blades do.

The Ripstik arrived promptly on the expected date. This skateboard alternative is AWESOME! I had already practiced on my friend's Ripstik and gotten good at it, so I already knew what to expect and could use the Ripstik right out of the box. The Ripstik is really fun because you can carve on it, go down hills really fast, and steer really well. However, Ripstiks are not that fun until you practice a lot and get good at Ripstiking. Also, even if you are good at it, it is nearly impossible to go up a hill on a Ripstik, there is no way to stop on a Ripstik other than jumping off or not going forwards at all, tricks are hard, and large cracks in the street or sidewalk will cause you to fly off. Despite all of this, the Ripstik is AWESOME for $70 and is AMAZING overall.

I’ve had one of these when I was younger so wanted one again. It’s so much fun to ride, but the wheels, oh man do they go fast. I literally got about 3/4 hours of life from them. Twice. I’ve changed the wheels twice already and worn them down to plastic just doing basic riding in my neighborhood while my wife walks besides me. We walk about 45-60 minutes a day, and before the week was even over, I had gone through the first brand new pair. Next week got another pair, same thing. I just don’t know if I can keep spending the money on these wheels, they’re expensive. It’s very unfortunate because I love riding it.

Purchased this for my ten year old nephew's b-day. He must have received 40 gifts between family and friends and he got some terrific things, but this was by far was the WINNER. He watched the video that came with the Ripstik, put on all his protective gear, and in a matter of hours had it mastered. As a bonus, it turned out to be an excellent way to get him to do math sums! He calculated the number of sidewalk squares and multiplied his distance. Potentially, this could be a dangerous toy if not used with out all the safety gear (helmet, wrist guards, etc), but if used properly, it appears to be promote balance skills and is obviously a great form of exercise, not to mention loads of fun.

Had a Ripstick a few years ago and loved it. Ordered this one a month ago. Exactly how I remembered it and lots of fun. Took it out for maybe 6-7 total hours riding on smooth surfaces and the rear wheel is totally chewed up. It’s only going to get worse if I continue riding. Wish they would provide extra wheels since the material used is very soft and not durable.

Best $60 I've spent! Love this board, it's like a combination of skateboarding and snowboarding. Once you catch on to the rhythm of carving, riding the Ripstik is a breeze. Wheels and bearings aren't the best quality but I'll be replacing those later anyway. I love how no pushing is needed and it propels itself forward even up hills. It's made out of a very durable plastic. Noticed the top cover started rattling after a few uses, tightening the screws on the bottom fixed that issue. Spent many afternoon hours on this and plan to spend a lot more.
