About this item

  • Creates an anti-wear layer at friction points to prevent metal-to-metal contact and eliminate wear.
  • Engine break-in where the new camshaft and lifters need extra protection, and ZDDP is perfect for that.
  • Mandatory for all flat tappet engines.
  • Works in both synthetic and standard mineral-based oils.
  • Two fluid ounces mixed with 6 quarts of oil create a ratio of 3000 – 3200 parts per million (ppm).
  • ZDDP protects high-load components from excessive wear and failures.
  • Use in every oil change for maximum protection.

Product Description

ZINC (ZDDP) is widely known to be the prime ingredient to protect flat tappet cams and valve train components within engines with high valve spring pressure, to control aggressive camshaft profiles. ZINC is also the protective additive necessary to protect older vintage engines that were produced when Zinc was the primary additive used to provide the last measure of protection against catastrophic failure. The proper amount of ZINC is to be used in relation to engine oil for the ideal amount of protection. Zinc provides the proper amount of the ZDDP additive to treat six quarts of engine oil, giving the proper ratio of 3000-3200 ppm for proper engine break in and protection of high pressure valve train components. Blended with a light base mineral oil that aids in the quick and complete dispersion into any engine oil for fast activation and protection during first startup. For maximum protection ZINC must be reapplied to engine oil when the oil and filter are changed.

How Does ZDDP / ZINC Work in Engine Oil?

As ZINC (ZDDP) is heated it creates a film that coats the engine parts with an anti-wear layer, think of it as a sacrificial layer that will wear away preventing wear on your vital engine parts. This is very beneficial for flat tappet motors, which have as the name suggests a flat lifter. When the engine is running the cam lobe is in constant contact with the flat surface of the tappet. This creates high temperatures due to the friction between the two. If the protective film created by the ZDDP was not present this heat and friction would wear away at the lifters and cam leading to engine failure.

ZDDP is Vital for Engine Break In

Breaking in an engine is vital to ensure proper sealing of the piston rings as well as setting the lifters to a new cam. This process will create a lot of heat and wear as engine parts wear away to fit the small areas that machining and manufacturing are just not able to fit up exactly. With Zinc these areas will be treated with a sacrificial layer preventing more wear than is needed to break the engine in.

Always need to add zinc when changing the oil in my 71 Vette. This product does a great job with my older engine.

We all know that guy who will buy a $65,000 machine and then only service it once a year with the cheapest oil on the shelf from Rural King or some other place with ultra cheap, home branded, questionably quality oil. Yep. That is my good buddy. So I go to the shop a couple weeks back and he is re-filling the skid steer engine with some ultra cheap, totally not to spec, gas engine oil. I question him and he states that it is perfect oil for the machine being 5W-30. I ask him if it meets the SAE ratings for the diesel, he repeats back that yep... it is 5W-30. So I go grab his New Holland book (C232 track skid steer) and look up the oil requirements, then I look at this junk oil, and I try to explain to him the SAE designations on the back of the bottle and the SAE requirements in the book. He looks at me like I have 3 heads and repeats that it is 5W-30, it is totally good. Someone.... kill me please! He has no clue what I am trying to explain. So I couldn't sleep knowing what he is doing, and I ran to Amazon to see if I can at least get zinc to add to the wrong oil and try to help the cam followers and rockers survive this next year. I found this. I ordered a few bottles and had them shipped to his shop, and I explained to him that these need to be dumped in to at least make an attempt in not prematurely wear the engine that likely is worth $20,000 or more!So the real question is, will he actually dump these into the machine, or will he toss them on a shelf never to be seen again? We may never know. But I bet next winter he will once again shop for the cheapest oil on earth to put in a machine that costs as much as some peoples home. He is who he is, you can never change that.

I put this in the 392 engine as requested per my mechanic to help with internal parts, I know it quiet down some of the ticks that these Hemi engines have seems to do a good job hopefully, long-term it will protect the internals

I'm not a scientist, but I've read enough to know that my old 4.0L inline 6 in my 2000 TJ needs zinc to prolong engine life and minimize rod knock. I add one of these with each oil change, and I'm convinced my now (24 yr old) engine runs a little quieter.

Competitive pricing as compared to other brands. Hard to estimate performance of this ZDDP additive (same issue with any brand). If there isn't undue valve train wear in a few thousand miles, then the product is great. (This product is not for modern autos with catalytic converters!!!!)

This is a high quality ZDDP product that does what it claims. I purchased it not for a performance application but to add an extra coating in my engine to high pressure areas because my engine has a design flaw with its roller arm cam followers and I wanted to give it the best chance at surviving a long life. I also wanted to use it in my young engine to aid in proper break-in. So far from my oil lab analysis results, before, during and after I can tell that it does infact add the ZDDP it claims, does increase break-in wear, but then also produces lower overall wear on subsequent oil changes where there is just engine oil alone. Also wanted to let everyone know, instead of buying pricey 4-stroke small engine oil for your yard equipment, buy a bottle of this and add it to a 5-quart regular automotive oil and get the same thing but for less expense!

Bought to help with the notorious valve tick. Added one bottle at oil change. Seemed to help. Bought another bottle for next oil change.

Have several flat tappet vehicles, this takes the worry away from finding oil with zinc already in it.
